Won't really have an effect unfortunately.

You really need legislation like protection for unions, but good luck with that.

Your culture is for the most part too toxic to allow for those changes. Lose the land of freedom and opportunity bullshit and you might have a hope for actually fixing shit.

Why is it that if you had said "our culture", I might have agreed with you, but since it's "your culture", I think you're being overly judgmental and harsh? My mind is a strange place.

Makes sense to me. It raises those "I can insult my brother but you can't" hackles. Outside criticism is usually not received well, primarily because it implies we need someone of THE GREAT XYZ NATION to point it out to us. Which...we don't. Not one country. Somebody notices the problems, I promise.

I thought the same thing. I'm okay with Americans saying things like that because it's they're talking about themselves and things that effect them. A non-American saying that comes across like "You're too stupid to figure out your problems on your own, why don't you change your way of thinking to fit mine and then you'll be set!"

Pointing out how harmful the deification of the idea of the self made man is, and the extent to which the mythologising of the idea that all you need to make a success in the country is hardwork and 'talent', is harmful to things like workers rights, is being edgy?

That attitude really has nothing to do with unions or union formation.

And the prevalent viewpoint in reality is a lot more cynical then that in every place I have ever lived.

it's not cultural, it's political. if the reason that labor is fucked in America atm were something inherent in American culture, we wouldn't have had stronger protections for unions in the past. it's a political decision that we made in America, and one that we can unmake.

That way of thinking wouldn't be a problem if it was actually kept to. Instead of paying their workers next to nothing or shipping their jobs overseas, they could give an opportunity for people to pay enough to at least survive.

I will say that I found Target to be the most anti-union. They have a video where they have workers pretend to feel "left out" because their co-workers are in a union. You won't become friends with your co-workers guise! It also blatantly spells out "You won't get more hours if you're in a union". Classy Target, classy.

Sadly Target is cleaner than Walmart on average. I say that loosely as I ended up getting MRSA from Target. But that was most likely from a selfish prick of a customer throwing their trash around as if workers are their parents or something. ;/

I've worked at Wal-Mart, and they also had an anti-union video. It was like one of those anti-drug PSAs except instead of a drug dealer, you were approached by a UNION REP, and it had tips for how to JUST SAY NO, and then went on to tell us why we don't need unions anymore.

That sounds kind of hilarious. I'm imagining a lot of bad acting and the union rep is made to look obviously shady and lurks in alleys and things.

I worked for them, too. IIRC, wasn't there also something in there about how you can be straight up fired for even thinking about unionizing, much less breathing the word out loud?

Re: Walmart Black Friday Walkout

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I just started working at Target a couple months ago, and the anti-union video was weird. That being said, everything I've seen and heard so far indicates that, at my store at least, the powers that be are good to their employees. I'm kind of nervously waiting to find the dark underbelly.

Pros: I had coffee at sunday huddles

Cons: They'd make me zone hardlines alone sometimes. To planogram. Including Pets. Ughhhh

I still find that I am unable to imagine why no one would want to hire you. You aren't presumptuous, arrogant, or hostile. You're also not consistently a gigantic piece of shit.

What is with your obsession with me, and my job situation.

Re: Walmart Black Friday Walkout

LOL protection for unions.

Part of the reason our education system is so fucked up is because teachers' unions have such a disproportionate amount of power that we are nigh unable to reform it. Teachers are not held accountable for their performance because unions contend that such a system would be "unfair," and they mobilize to block any attempts to move in that direction. And teachers who do not want to be unionized have to pay a fucking yearly fee for the privilege. Otherwise, they'll be dismissed.

See, unions have the power to do that, here. If you're looking to get a job that's associated with a union, then you damn well better join the union, whether you want to or not. Because if you're not in the union, then you will NEVER get the pay or hours of your unionized fellows. And, fuck, even if you do join the union, you'll have to spend years proving your loyalty before you get shit. You can be the best damn worker they have, and they'll fuck you in favor of the idiot who can't tell his right foot from his left but who has paid his dues and attended meetings for 20 years.

Union leaders here are like the party bosses of old. And they're allowed to be, because of "union protections."

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

Thing is... performance based is also bullshit. Because not all kids can perform at the top. And when some tests are graded based on the top people having the top scores and the rest in proportion...

i don't understand? you don't think someone who performs better at their job should be better regarded or better remunerated because the under-performer could never live up to it? i do a better job but i should suffer because others' don't have my skills?

Part of the reason our education system is fucked up is because of jackholes who insist on blaming the teachers and teachers' unions for everything that's wrong with the education system instead of looking at the problem of massive underfunding, non-caring administrators, uninvolved parents, lack of school discipline, and unmotivated students.

^ Fixed that for you.

I gotta agree here. Yes, some bad teachers slip through the cracks, like the one who showed us soft porn in class, but most of the time the problem resides in a lot of other areas. Teachers cannot be blamed for an overall and entirely corrupted system.

In fact, it was watching all the shit my good teachers got for everything that was wrong, even if they had no control or even no connection with the problem, that made me decide against teaching as a career option. I had wanted to be a teacher for years but with the shit they go through? So not worth it.
