Re: Walmart Black Friday Walkout
(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 01:10 am (UTC)(link)Part of the reason our education system is so fucked up is because teachers' unions have such a disproportionate amount of power that we are nigh unable to reform it. Teachers are not held accountable for their performance because unions contend that such a system would be "unfair," and they mobilize to block any attempts to move in that direction. And teachers who do not want to be unionized have to pay a fucking yearly fee for the privilege. Otherwise, they'll be dismissed.
See, unions have the power to do that, here. If you're looking to get a job that's associated with a union, then you damn well better join the union, whether you want to or not. Because if you're not in the union, then you will NEVER get the pay or hours of your unionized fellows. And, fuck, even if you do join the union, you'll have to spend years proving your loyalty before you get shit. You can be the best damn worker they have, and they'll fuck you in favor of the idiot who can't tell his right foot from his left but who has paid his dues and attended meetings for 20 years.
Union leaders here are like the party bosses of old. And they're allowed to be, because of "union protections."
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 03:13 am (UTC)(link)There are also factors teachers cannot control that have to do with students' family, community, and economic situations.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Walmart Black Friday Walkout
In fact, it was watching all the shit my good teachers got for everything that was wrong, even if they had no control or even no connection with the problem, that made me decide against teaching as a career option. I had wanted to be a teacher for years but with the shit they go through? So not worth it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)Same. I'm getting a six-figure job first and then retire early to tutor kids for free. Fuck the shit that is the education system.
Re: Walmart Black Friday Walkout
I'm personally floundering trying to figure out where to take my career now.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)I don't know what your major is or how much leeway there is in your field. I think as long as you're a good employee and is willing to learn new things and advertise your strengths, you will be fine.
Good luck!
