I think The Doctor and River would have worked if Moffat didn't destroy her.

But Moffat created her. Who else would have written her?

Yeah, but her initial representation in the series was way different from what she actually ended up being. Once her motivations were revealed, it undermined pretty much everything that made her cool in the first place. So yeah, Moffat may have created her, but to a lot of fans he also ruined her when the big reveal about her motivations and origins took place.

And the worst thing is I don't believe for one second that it was intentional all along. I really think the moff made a significant part of it up retroactively. The contrast is just too jarring to have been completely planned out.

I agree with your last statement, I think Moffat made up a lot of things about River as he went so it would seem like she wasn't just the Doctor's wife which fans guessed from the beginning.

I feel like initially she was just supposed to be a human companion from the future.

Yeah, he created her, but he also ruined her. In the Library episodes, she was confident, smart, well rounded, and sane. It left me excited to see how the character would unfold and see her past. But instead he decided to make her insane, unstable, crazy and used fuzzy Moffat!logic to make her a Time Lord.

Well, remember that we're seeing her timeline run achronologically. River in the Library is older and wiser and has learnt from her mistakes. I've seen people protesting the way she was characterised in TWORS, for instance - but that's not actually taking into account the fact that she's actually quite young there. She regenerated, LKH happened, she was left in the 51st century, became an archeologist, and was immediately captured by the Silence again - she's missing all these formative experiences.

Since we see her last encounter first, of course she's going to come across as far more mature and well-rounded than she is in other encounters. Is that a good way to portray a character? Eh, iffy on that, but given the circumstances, there is at least an explanation for it.

Sure, that's something that would probably happen if you viewed anybody's life backwards. I do still think, however, that the way she was written was very problematic (and it bothers me especially that her forcing the Doctor to marry her is supposed to be ~romantic and wonderful~).

True >.< I'd like it a lot more if they actually ACKNOWLEDGED the problematic stuff! As it is, I don't mind it because I can sort of... see the whole problematic stuff myself and view it as this complex, not necessarily mutually romantic relationship, but the show actually going, "Well, yes, there are issues" would be AMAZING.

Someone who isn't a fucking asshat?

Do you seriously not think it's possible for someone to create a decent character and then ruin said character over the course of a story-arc? If so, then you're a bigger piece of shit moron than I thought you were.

Oh, ill_omened, do you always whisper such sweet nothings to all the girls or is it just me?

River was soooo cool in series 4, and I love that portrayal of River. I hate who she's become (or was like? Well in meta terms it's become) because she's such a Moffat archetype now.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure that was Moffat's gameplan from the beginning tbqh.
