Re: Piracy

I torrent manga/anime, cartoons, movies, and some comics, but I also buy loads of stuff (well, loads compared to my financial situation).

While most anime and manga are good for one watch/read, I would never consider picking them up ever again (and watching anime on online players is a chore thanks to my shitty Internet connection/region locks). In the case of anime, the ones I'd be willing to buy aren't released on BD in the UK (or aren't released at all). In the case of manga, many of the ones I want are either unavailable in official English translation, or they are OOP/discontinued. I don't feel particularly bad for torrenting them and I find it incredibly funny how bitchy the people at Anime News Network can be about piracy (and despite sitting on their very high moral horsey, they are the quickest to start defending pedophiles and to start shitting on women, el oh el).

The cartoons I watch are usually quite old and I have already watched them a thousand times on TV when I was a kid, so it's not like the studio is losing money on me.

With movies, eh, most movies are dubbed in my country (all of them are freaking horrible) so I can't watch them in the cinema (except for the rare occasions when there is a limited original language run) and I'm not really interested enough in newer ones to invest into the DVDs/BDs. I sometimes buy DVDs of older movies though.

In the case of comics, I pirate the first few issues, decide whether I like them or not, read some reviews, and if I find them satisfactory, I buy/wait for the TPBs. There are a few bad/mediocre comics I keep torrenting because I am interested where things are going/when will things start getting better/need background information for other comics (hey, thanks fucking long running continuities/crossovers/events!).

I used to pirate many video games as well, but because they are incredibly time consuming, now I mostly play the ones I have already bought.

Sometimes I just cannot resist and troll the anti-piracy people and say that there is no way in hell I'd pay for things I can get for free! They are just as annoying as the "lol, I am wealthy but paying for games/DVDs/comics is for idiots, I pay for mah Internet, isn't that enough?!" guys.

Anime/manga can be a gateway to pirating because a lot of stuff just does not get released so if you want to see it at all you need to pirate it.

Anime and manga companies also tend to have some of the messiest problems when it comes to how long a company has rights and what it does with those rights. I've seen series that had about 2 dvds released and then never actually completed the series.

Things also go out of print, Sailormoon is a big one for me, I was about to get about 2 of the box sets when they were still in print, everything else I had to bootleg and then they never even did the last season so I had to bootleg that either way. It's kind of ridiculous considering how popular Sailormoon is internationally but we've still never gotten the whole anime properly.
