Piracy

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
We've had a few threads on this recently, and I've been genuinely surprised by the responses.

Am I the only person who doesn't pirate, but honestly doesn't particularly care when other people do?

On a scale of badness tm, this is perhaps just below jay walking.

Re: Piracy

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
These days I almost never pirate. I do occasionally torrent episodes of TV shows that have been on broadcast TV but that's it. But I don't care when other people do either, because a) I used to and b) why care?

Re: Piracy

YANA. I rarely pirate now because I don't have much time for media entertainment anymore. I don't give a damn if you pirate and found something you really enjoyed. But if you pirate and hord and don't watch or listen to what you pirated, I think you're a bit of an ass.

I don't pirate. Mainly because I've gotta some viruses from some shady places.

But if someone wants to pirate/torrent/dl stuff, I'm not their mom, so I don't care.

Lol, I got into a raging wankfest with someone on this comm a couple of months ago over pirating. It was like I was defending baby murderers instead of people who sometimes download something off the net, idek, it was crazy.

...when I saw the term "baby murderers" I read it as babies who murder people.

It took a few seconds for me to realize what you really meant.

Where I live most TV series are shown on TV months after they aired, or never at all. And if (big if) the DVDs make it here they are ridiculously expensive. Therefore, torrent sites are my lifeline.

And well, I may be biased but I get a chuckle when people who have nevah pirated anything it their lives get scared of them viruses that are going to eat their computers if they do so much as download a mini episode or something.

Re: Piracy

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I pirate but I buy SO MUCH since I can only fit so much on my computer (and I don't like relying on external hard drives because I've had issues with them crashing.) There are actually a ton of dvds I never would have bought if not for pirating.

Re: Piracy

Exactly this. Before pirating was a viable option, it's not like I randomly walked into stores and bought random cd's, books or dvd's. Generally I would borrow these things from friends or the library, and if I liked them I would go out and buy them,

Replace 'borrow' with 'download', and you've got exactly what I do now, except I'm actually exposed to way more stuff because I'm not reliant on whatever my friends have/what's on tv. I can give anything a try now.

Same here. I definitely would not have purchase some TV shows if it wasn't for the fact that I knew I would enjoy it and rewatch it multiple times.

I used to pirate a lot until I hit the most effective barrier ever -- HD space limit.

Probably the single thing I torrent the most these days is comics. Hundreds of 'em -- mostly Batman or Justice League.

Re: Piracy

[personal profile] dethtoll 2012-10-21 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
And really, probably the one thing I don't pirate is TV shows. HD space isn't so much the problem as it's closed captions and subtitles are never included.

Well also books, but that's because I don't believe in e-books.

If I didn't pirate I would most likely never get to watch most of my shows because they don't air here, and the ones who do can take up to a year to air.

Though I make a point of buying as many box sets as I can afford, even if I do have to order most of it online, and pay import tax on it.

I only pirate one show, because it's being Screwed by The Network.

Otherwise, I just take music.

Used to never pirate until a friend suggested it to me. Some things I never would've been able to find any other way. And because I downloaded certain things, I then went out and bought the DVD's/comics/etc because I knew I would enjoy them.

I don't pirate either. I'll watch stuff on-line, but I've never downloaded a movie, show, or song. I don't really care if other people do either. Money is tight for a lot of people, so it doesn't feel right faulting them for wanting to watch/listen to something they enjoy. I feel there are bigger fish to fry than a celebrity not getting an extra few dollars.

Re: Piracy

I don't download but I occasionally stream; don't know if that counts?
And I don't care what other people do.

Re: Piracy

I torrent manga/anime, cartoons, movies, and some comics, but I also buy loads of stuff (well, loads compared to my financial situation).

While most anime and manga are good for one watch/read, I would never consider picking them up ever again (and watching anime on online players is a chore thanks to my shitty Internet connection/region locks). In the case of anime, the ones I'd be willing to buy aren't released on BD in the UK (or aren't released at all). In the case of manga, many of the ones I want are either unavailable in official English translation, or they are OOP/discontinued. I don't feel particularly bad for torrenting them and I find it incredibly funny how bitchy the people at Anime News Network can be about piracy (and despite sitting on their very high moral horsey, they are the quickest to start defending pedophiles and to start shitting on women, el oh el).

The cartoons I watch are usually quite old and I have already watched them a thousand times on TV when I was a kid, so it's not like the studio is losing money on me.

With movies, eh, most movies are dubbed in my country (all of them are freaking horrible) so I can't watch them in the cinema (except for the rare occasions when there is a limited original language run) and I'm not really interested enough in newer ones to invest into the DVDs/BDs. I sometimes buy DVDs of older movies though.

In the case of comics, I pirate the first few issues, decide whether I like them or not, read some reviews, and if I find them satisfactory, I buy/wait for the TPBs. There are a few bad/mediocre comics I keep torrenting because I am interested where things are going/when will things start getting better/need background information for other comics (hey, thanks fucking long running continuities/crossovers/events!).

I used to pirate many video games as well, but because they are incredibly time consuming, now I mostly play the ones I have already bought.

Sometimes I just cannot resist and troll the anti-piracy people and say that there is no way in hell I'd pay for things I can get for free! They are just as annoying as the "lol, I am wealthy but paying for games/DVDs/comics is for idiots, I pay for mah Internet, isn't that enough?!" guys.

I only pirate things that I wouldn't be able to get in a reasonable manner. So, things like very rare, obscure anime/vg soundtracks. Or that single song that was remixed/remade for a soundtrack and then not included in that soundtrack or made available for purchase elsewhere (Florence + the Machine's "I'm Not Calling You A Liar" for DA2 is a good example). I believe really strongly in supporting artists where I can.

I don't think pirating is as bad as some people make it out to be, but the defenses people use for it are generally really stupid. It's sort of like the 'war on drugs', imo. I don't care if you use drugs and I think they should be legal, but if you're arguing for their legality using a bunch of made up 'facts' and stoner-logic bullshit I'm going to think you're a massive tool.

I don't pirate generally (except when it's entirely cost-prohibitive for me to import something) and I don't care what others do, but when those who pirate look down on me for paying for something, that's when I have a problem.

Yes I like to support the artists and buy CDs/mp3s.

Yes, I like to buy DVDs for the special features and being able to watch it on my old CRT TV.

Where I live, the prices of everything are so jacked up that it's just easier to pirate sometimes. It also helps for things that just don't get released here (or do, but heavily censored).

Also, if pirating a show gets it to me within hours instead of MONTHS of it airing in America? Then fuck it, I'll pirate all I damn well want.

Re: Piracy

I mostly pirate music, and an occasional game, simply because I couldn't afford to pay for all of it. When I do get extra money, I usually buy it but...-shrugs-

I mostly pirate music. I'll occasionally stream things online that don't air where I live, or have gone off the air. Some of them don't even have DVDs so I can't watch them that way. There's also subbed anime, since the last several seasons of my favourite anime didn't air outside of Japan and the rest got chopped up to hell when it did.

And I jay walk all the time, but everyone does where I live. The streets are practically built for it. There's one spot by a supermarket a few blocks from where I live that has a long stretch between lights, and I do mean quite long. There's a barrier of sorts down the middle of the road there, most of it covered in flowers and brush and trees. But there is this one spot that is concrete. There's no signage on it--there's signage in one of the lower brush parts, but not there--so that's not why it's there. It is at just a spot not far from where one of the main exits for people walking to the supermarket come out. I can fathom no reason for it being there other than to tacitly encourage jaywalking.

I pirate shit I honest to god wouldn't buy normally. Mostly music, but if I love certain bands/songs I will buy.

And there's stuff like Game of Thrones season 2, which I can't watch UNLESS I pirate. I'll be happy to buy the season on Blu ray or iTunes next year though when it's out.

Don't care what other people do generally, but if you pirate your supposed 'absolute favourite band EVAR's music I might judge you.

I rarely pirate these days because I've got a job now. I tend to pirate either the odd song, to try out a game before purchase or the movie I am not sure if it's fun or not (Battleship 2012 urgh)
Oh, and the one book to see what it's like but I refuse to give money to the author on.
