I'm probably risking fandom shunning forever if I say I agree with you, but maybe I do. I've never genderswapped or raceswapped any characters, but it does seem that people would generally be a lot more upset by a raceswap than a genderswap. And that IS kind of interesting.

That could be because I don't really see how race swapping would make the character or their interactions or issues any different, unless it's done so that the author can write some kind of PSA about racism, which yeah, soapboxing is kinda not really loved. The issues a female Merlin would face because she is a woman are much greater than the issues Merlin would face if he were black, especially in a universe where race doesn't seem to be much an issue.

Hmm. I think the issues could be VERY different, unless the setting is clearly one where there is no such thing as racial prejudice. I was thinking that's probably one reason people might be more offended by raceswap, actually, when I sat down to ponder it -- because changing someone's race means changing their whole cultural history, and a lot of writers probably wouldn't get that right.

Except that only works in real present world canons, not in fantasy canons. Fantasy and Sci fi shows tend to treat all the races as pretty much equally and give them more or less the same cultural history. If there is some cultural difference it will likely have nothing to do with their race but rather be based on their abilities or caste.

You start to wonder why the author changed the character's race. What's being explored? Why? With genderswap is easy to tell.
