Wait, what? How is Merlin/Merlynn like social justice faux pas? What does being a female cis have to do with Merlin/Merlynn?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh good, I'm glad I'm not the only one trying to figure out what they missed.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
They changed Merlin's gender so they can heterosexually ship her with Arthur?

No, genderswap isn't any sort of faux pas unless the character's personality drastically changes in response to the gender change. Now, if it's a story about a trans* character, there can be other faux pas involved, but in neither case is the fic inherently a faux pas.

Genderswap is a pretty popular trope in lots of fandoms, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it has more to do with the reason the character has been genderswapped. If the point is to do a character study - how would things be different if this character was a different gender, how would they be different as a person, would events play out differently and so on - then it's fine and fun and go for it.

If however, the whole point is "I want to ship same Sex Character with Same Sex Character but ewww gays are gross/I don't like slash/being gay is a sin and means you're diseased, so I'll change one of them into an Opposite Sex Character" - then yes. This is a problem.

I also think it's problematic if it's done because I Don't Like Slash But This Is The Only Pairing That Gets Reviews, So I'll Genderflip One Character So I Don't Have To Write Slash But I Will Also Pull In All The Slash Fans.

I'm looking at you, Teen Wolf fandom.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
And if the story is well-written, how would one tell the difference?

yup, this exactly. genderswap is awesome when it's done right and not to get around "the icky gays problem".

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
This exactly.

I met this one guy in Card Captor Sakura fandom who would systematically turn Yukito into a woman in his fics, because "well obviously, Touya and Yukito love each other but they can't love each other like a man and a woman because they're both guys".

Pretty much this. Sadly I've known someone whose got the 'being gay is a sin' mindset who both writes slash and is bisexual [technically. She'd never act on it though because ~that's a sin~.]. : /

Does it usually come across that way?

I love slash, but I wanted to try to expand my writing horizons, so to speak, so I'm working on a story with a character that would be typically slash with one-half gender-swapped. Just to see if I could do it. If it's offensive, though, maybe I'll scrap it.

I've actually never seen het Sterek, but I'm not surprised that is exists for reasons you are pointing out since I've seen it in other fandoms. All of the Sterek genderswaps I've read are f/f, so luckily I haven't seen what you are talking about. Is it all girl!Stiles/boy!Derek, or is there girl!Derek/boy!Stiles as well? The latter is actually really intriguing to me...

I agree with your comment, btw. Genderswaps are one of my favorite fic tropes, and it's always really obvious if someone is doing it because they genuinely interested in it or if it's just so they don't write slash.

What about I Like Slash A Lot But I Like Het And Femslash Too So I'll Flip The Gender Of One Or Both Characters To Do Something Different?

Is that problematic?

"which forces her to protect a prince who didn't even like her"

Is making me grit my teeth.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, I didn't know that some people write genderswap because they don't like slash O_o

All the genderswap I've read is written by slash writers wanting to try something different.

Anyway, no need to feel guilty. I LOVE genderswap het (it's the only het I'll read, lol).

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa whoa whoa, suddenly genderswap isn't ok? It isn't a fun and interesting way to explore character relationships, romances, stereotypes, and uncomfortable double-standards?

If that's the case, fuck this noise, if people are getting this pedantic and bitchy over nothing I'm holing up in my little Web Original fandom and never venturing out into other fandoms again.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep it's internet 'social justice' for ya.

Going after genderswap fic writers while real world problems, go unnoticed.

I have no problem with people genderbending a character so that they can ship them because slash doesn't do anything for them. What i judge is someone who only writes fics with genderbended characters and completely forgets the canon women.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I side-eye people who go to femslash kinkmemes and then only write stories about genderbent guys.

I'm probably risking fandom shunning forever if I say I agree with you, but maybe I do. I've never genderswapped or raceswapped any characters, but it does seem that people would generally be a lot more upset by a raceswap than a genderswap. And that IS kind of interesting.

Looks like a pretty standard case of genderswitch to me. That's a pretty common AU and narrative kink. It's been around forever, I'm surprised you haven't come across it before.
