Skinny Minnie Controversy

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
This November a new ad campaign is coming out. Basically Minnie and friends go to a dream world where they're all models. They made them very tall, and the women very, very, very, very skinny. People are crying out because they feel it's giving the wrong impression to little girls.

Your thoughts? Minnie is an average character IMO, so I could see why this might effect some small girls.

I guess it depends on the actual message of the ad campaign? What is this even for?

wow yeah after googling it I agree. How did anyone think that would be a good idea?

Re: Skinny Minnie Controversy

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
The designers said they had to because "Minnie wouldn't look good in their dresses if she wasn't that tall+skinny". /Eyeroll

It's awful all around, not only it looks awful but sends such a horrible message to little girls.

Doesn't it send a horrible message to little boys, too? The male characters are also thin as hell.

Personally, I'm more inclined to think that children will be unsettled rather than influenced to wanna look like this. I mean, seriously -- highly stylized or not -- those are just plain creepy-looking O_o

AYRT

Oh, of course, my anti-gendered-toys self is kinda sad now that I didn't write it clearly on my first post (LOL ignore me xD)

And yup, they are downright creepy!

If Disney wanted to do a line of models, why not just use the princesses? They're actually human-shaped, it would look far less... unsettling.

They did have the designer dolls that came out last holiday season. OR so.

Those looked neat, if a little odd for those of us not used to them. and they now have a line for the villainesses....but they FAILED on Ursula and the Queen of Hearts. :/

Anyone know how to find all the images? I saw the ones the anon posted, but I'm having trouble finding anything about this with Google....

The ones that were posted are pretty horrible, though. Their legs look like they'd break like twigs if they tried to walk! To be honest, I'm not quite as bothered by things like Barbie as many people are. But this ad campaign seems bizarre from what I've seen. And I'm not sure how I feel about seeing a mouse get a "sexy" figure. I mean, she's a mouse. An anthromorphized one, but still....

Okay, I did just find some articles on it. Still interested in seeing more if there is anything, though.

I'm not sure about "sends the wrong message to little girls" thing, but it's very weird. And I have seen someone point out that if they had to make the characters that skinny to look good in designer clothes that probably says something weird about the designs...

I agree with the general outcry.

You know, I have to say that when I first saw that picture of Minnie I had no context so I was just like, "Who the fuck is this?" Guys, she doesn't even look like Minnie. I could not recognize her at all.

Also, the picture is just ugly as fuck, whether she's Minnie or no.

But first this and now Disney's "First Latina Princess" fuck up. They are not doing so well on PR right now.

I just learned about Sophia. I swear they made her "latina" as an afterthought.

Re: Skinny Minnie Controversy

Yeah, or they thought they could get away with it.

It's like they went:

"Oh hey, now that we have this character let's throw minorities a bone and make her Latina! We can make her say a few words that aren't English every so often! That will be enough right? It's not like they have their own distinct characteristics and culture right? The audience will love us for being so inclusive."

And then there was the backlash.

"It's fantasy you guys. She's not really Latina!"

Shoot me now.

Just googled those images.

WHAT. THE FUCK. ARE THOSE ABOMINATIONS?!

D:

It's like they took stick figures and stuck their cartoon heads on the bodies.

WAT.

WHY.

UGH

Re: Skinny Minnie Controversy

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
This is stupid. Everything is exaggerated in cartoons, it's a stylistic choice. Not to mention that kids don't see these things the way adults do. Their perception of proportions and mass isn't as polished as an adult's. If the point is that the characters are too skinny, how are they gonna get that point across without overexaggerating the skinniness?

Re: Skinny Minnie Controversy

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The reason they are sticks was because the designers said *their* dresses would not look good on Minnie's figure. It was not a stylistic choice.

Re: Skinny Minnie Controversy

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Who's going to tell that to a kid though? I mean yeah it's creepy of the designers but I doubt it's in the animation or in a forward saying "The designers made us to this."

It's just a weird Psychedelic dream sequence if you don't have any context.
