Everyone I know writes time in the 24 hour clock. Say, if asked to write down the time, we all put 18:40 rather than 6:40pm.

I'm British.

So, where are you all, random people, and how do you write it? 12 hour, 24 hour, something completely different? :D

I only ask because I was chatting with someone, and when they asked what time it was where I am, I answered with the 24 hour clock. They proceeded to go ':( Military time!' or something similar, and it kind of threw me.

So, I'm curious to find out which way is more common! :)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
AM/PM is more common in English-speaking parts of North America. Quebec goes by __h__ iirc.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
*__h__ as in 18h30

I like 24 hour. I'm always surprised at how hard it is for some people to figure out, haha.

Also, the west coast of Canada. Oops! However, I'm not a military brat.

I don't use it, but I can quickly recognize what time is being said when someone tells it in 24 HR.

Probably from being a military brat.

For some reason it's not instinctual for me, even growing up as a French Canadian. I still have to mentally subtract 12 whenever someone tells me the time in 24h, because "18h 20" doesn't mean a thing to me, but 6:20 does.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
USA so we use 12 hour. here only people in the military typically use 24 hour clock, hence the term military time. i hear people call it that instead of '24 hour' whatever.

Ditto that. I'm fairly good at converting between military time and AM/PM due to our software often having things listed in 24 hour times, but I still have to pause to realign mentally.

I'm British too, but I prefer the 12 hour clock. The 24 hour one always makes me pause and do mental maths.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
In Western Australia I think the 12-hour clock is more common. I just use 24 hour so I don't have to muck around with am and pm nonsense.

I'm from the US, but I often use a 24 hour clock. But then, I also write the date the British/European (day/month/year instead of month/day/year) style, too.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
From Argentina, and I use both. I think it's more common for digital clocks to use 24 hour time, but neither usage will get you weird looks.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in the U.S., and most things use 12-hour, but I'm not thrown when I trip over 24-hour.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm British, and I normally use 12 hour clock. Even when I book a train or something where it says the time in 24h on the ticket I'll still say, "I'm getting the 13:05 so can you pick me up your end about two?"

I don't find the 24h clock difficult or anything, it's just never become my standard.

I'm American, and write in 12 hour time, but watching a combination of too much Star Trek and M*A*S*H has given me the habit of randomly converting time to 24-hour military time "oh-eight-hundred, etc" in my head to amuse myself.

Love that ':( emoticon, btw :D

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm American and I always use the 12-hour clock. I got used to the 24-hour clock for a little bit while I did homestay in Japan, but I've long since forgotten how to convert it in my head and I always have to count it out. 'xD

It's 17:27 here.

I'm on the west coast of Canada and not remotely related to anyone in the military, but I just prefer it. Every timepiece I control that has the option is set to 24 hour time.

US: We use 12-hour, except for at work where we use 24-hr.

I'm in the US. I use 24 hour when I'm at work (nursing home) and 12 hour everywhere else.

Canadian, eh, and most people hear use AM/PM. But I lived in Japan for a while and 24 hour is more common there so I'm fine with it. Also my alarm clock is 24 hour for some reason and has no other setting.

American here, I always went by AM/PM before I became a trucker. In this job the 24 hour clock is the standard, and it's now the standard my brain uses too. XD Americans ime usually tell time in AM and PM and refer to the 24 hour clock as "military time" because it's not often used outside the military.

24h. I'm Swedish. We don't use that AM/PM business here and it fucks with my head; can never remember which one is when.

Depends on who I'm talking too. Close friends/family get the am/pm. Everyone else gets 24 hour time. Never heard it called Military time before, lol.

Australian (East Coast), I use 12-hour. I have no trouble at all with 24-hour - our microwave is on 24-hour time - but tend to mentally translate it automatically. Like, I glance over, see 19:15, and go, "Oh, quarter past seven, time to feed the cats!" or something.
