WHAT UP

[personal profile] tyger66 2012-10-23 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry to break up your anti-SJW party, but it's pretty common for non-white men to be completely ignored when it comes to slash pairings. Naturally there are exceptions (and k-pop/j-pop fandoms), but MY GOD, look at the fandoms with extremely prominent black men in leads roles that get passed over for white dudes that are so much less interesting.

I'm pretty anti-SJW, personally, but even I can't pretend that slashdom isn't extremely biased towards WHITE m/m relationships.

Perfect and current example of this is Teen Wolf (although Scott is latino and not black). Fandom creams themselves over 2 white dudes who have little to no interaction and hate each other, ignoring the POC lead. And the canon POC gay character.

Two other examples from fandoms that I love are Turk from Scrubs and, especially egregious, Gus from Psych.

Both show have slash pairings basically spoon fed to the viewer, both those pairings are white guy/black guy, and both pairings are completely ignored in favor of shipping the white main character with a guy who (by all appearances) can't stand him.

I prefer ships where the guys start off hating each other, and I won't deny that, being white, I tend to find white people more attractive to me personally, so I am also guilty of contributing to the problem. However. in the cases where I have shipped pairings involving non-white men, there has been exactly NO FIC EVER.

I remember how dissapointed i was when i looked up scrubs fics and found almost no Turk/JD. So so dissapointed. I mean, come on! Chocolate bear?!

Ugh, don't even get me started on Psych. When I first got into that show, I could not believe how little Shawn/Gus fic there was. Shawn/Lassiter? I can see how that dynamic would be appealing, but come on. Shawn/Gus was practically handed to us and everyone would rather have Shawn/Lassiter?

Re: WHAT UP

I like Lassiter more than any character other than Shawn, so I went straight for Shawn/Lassiter (also probably some unconscious racism on my part. *shame*), but I also was SHOCKED at the lack of Shus in Psych fandom! They are totally the best dudebros ever, and if Gus was white I think they would be the number one pairing.

That Turk and JD is unpopular makes me really sad :(
They sung the theme song for bromance FFS!

In regards to the Scott thing, I doubt it has less to do with his race and more to do with the fact that in the first season who was not a very good character. He was only focused on, Allisonallisonallison. And well, first impressions are crucial. So your choices in the first episode of main characters were: Lovesick moron, hilarious sidekick, or hot broody guy.

Also, until someone told me that Scott (and whoever his actor is Tyler something) was hispanic, I would not have known for sure. Maybe I just hang around a lot of tan guys.

Re: WHAT UP

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a fan of Sterek, personally, but I don't think the lack of Scott/Stiles slash is entirely because Scott is a POC. I think it has more to do with the fact that the way that Scott was written in season one didn't really resonate with a lot of people, and he wasn't very popular with fandom as a result. I love Scott as a character, but the writers focused a lot on establishing the basis for his relationship with Allison in season one, and as a result some of the things I think they were trying to get across about his character (the fact that he never really gives up, cares deeply about everyone - not just Allison, etc) got a bit lost in the shuffle. He had this horrible, life changing thing happen to him and was thrown into circumstances beyond his control, but there were times when it seemed that story took a backseat to "SCOTT + ALLISON = TRU LUV." Yes, people do tend to get fixated on one another, especially at the start of a relationship, but I think a lot of people just found it incredibly irritating that people were dying and there was horrible shit going on, and yet a large chunk of the narrative wanted to focus on walks through the woods and random make-out scenes. Scott and Allison are great together, but for large parts of season one the writers were trying to sell it so hard that a lot of times Scott came across as caring about Allison above and beyond anything else. I don't think Scott's as completely and terribly awful in the first season as a lot of fandom likes to portray him as being, but there were honestly parts where I found the constant "AllisonAllisonAllison" pretty damn annoying.

As for Danny, I have yet to come across anyone in fandom who doesn't like him, and Danny/Jackson has a pretty decent following, as far as non-Sterek ships go. Danny is, unfortunately, a tertiary character a best, though, so it's a bit more understandable that he isn't included in as much of the fic as the main cast. But considering the amount of screen time he gets relative to the amount of fanworks including him, I think he gets a decent amount of love.

Now, if you want to talk about the fact that so many people seem to forget about Danny when they're clamoring for an on-screen queer romance and holding up Sterek as the best choice for this, then yeah, there are some definite issues there. But that has to do more with the general tendency of overly enthusiastic shippers to erase canon queer characters in favor of promoting their ship as the One True Way to increase queer representation and equality for all.

I thought it was a common observation about the most vocal SJWs that they go nuts over all the stupid crap but only themselves write and read about white characters.

i really wish someone had come up with a different term than SJW to describe flop people like that. seeing the term 'social justice' used as an insult burns my fucking buns.

Unfortunately it became inevitable once people starting using something that's supposed to mean "equal rights for minorities" to instead mean "don't you dare doubt my true identity as an autistic space raccoon."

How many fandoms have extremely prominent black men in lead roles, exactly? And ones that aren't nixed from the pairing line up by age/relationship to other characters?

Re: WHAT UP

House MD, Psych, Scrubs (an old one, I know, but the fandom was crazy active), Avengers, Iron Man and Iron Man 2, Torchwood: Miracle Day, Blade, RENT, Mass Effect 2 (do video games count?), Dexter (Doakes in seasons one and two, and yes I know--not extremely prominent, and yes they killed him off, but I wanted fic for him SO BAD, and it never happened, so I'm a little bitter.)

There are also untold numbers of fandoms I am NOT familiar with, so feel free to add to this admittedly short list.

Yes! Grimm. I totally need some Hank/Monroe fic in my life. I'm loving their interactions this year.

Common Law on USANetwork? A white guy and a black guy as detective partners sent to marriage counselling to deal with their partnership issues.

(I'm not a part of fandom for that, but I now wonder about their slashiness.)

NCIS: LA? I don't watch it personally, but I thought LL Cool J and Chris O'Donnell's characters had a pretty strong slash following.

Re: WHAT UP

Also Criminal Minds, although Derek/Reid is a fairly popular ship in its own right.

Seconding the disappointment over lack of Doakes fic. And I'm still devastated over Tony/Rhodey. I giggled my way through IM1 in anticipation of fandom's reaction and... nothing. Oh but you can find Tony/Everyone One Else Ever Including the Damn AI.

Adding Community & Red Dwarf.

I'm the anon that posted the first comment here, and IA. I wasn't even trying to be a SJW. The big slash pairings in fandoms tend to be white m/m pairings, unfortunately. I wish it was different, but alas.
