Scam?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Heeeeey F!S I recently got this email (http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mcdct3qBvI1qglcx2.png) claiming to be from Blizzard Entertainment, and it's claiming that I have a Diablo III account, and I'm in trouble for trying to sell it.

Two problems.

1. I don't have a Diablo III account.
2. I don't even know what Diablo is.

But, I'm afraid to ignore it, because it could be bad.

Has anyone else had trouble with this email? Is it just a scam, and I just need to delete the email/block the sender?

It's fishing spam, ignore it and report it, if possible. I get the same type from WoW (World of Warcraft) and I don't play WoW, much less have an account.

Hmmm.. the link LOOKS to legitimately lead to the battle.net website, which it should if you actually had a Diablo III account. Did someone make an account using your address or something? I'm not sure how that would work....

But I'd still be too scared to click it. XD

There are ways to make it look like the address is right when it isn't. You know you can use html to mask the url right? Like, I make it look like http://www.dreamwidth.org (http://www.google.org/) (if this doesn't show up right, click "reply to this comment" and then "more options" and hopefully it'll look like a proper link) leads to the dreamwidth site but if you hover your mouse or cursor over the link, you'll see that it actually leads to Google.

1) If it sounds off, it probably is.
2) Always hover over links to make sure they go where they say they go.
3) Don't click on redirected links like http://t.co/numbers+letters and http://bit.ly/bunchofstuff unless they come from a trusted source.
4) Be extra weary when it's related to money or personal accounts.

I thought of that after. But since I couldn't tell from a screencap.. well, yeah.

And yeah, the shortened links always make me wary. =P

ONLY IF YOU NEVER DO IT AGAIN, ANON, AND YOU PROMISE ME THAT YOU DO, IN FACT, KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.

I DO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. WEARY IS TIRED WHEREAS WARY IS LIKE BEWARE. I DON'T KNOW HOW IT HAPPENED. I'M SORRY.

you should contact blizzard directly if you are worried. tell them your email and send the cap along to them, ask if it's legit.

Scam. Doesn't matter either way: You don't have an account, and they're threatening to remove the account you don't have for something you didn't do. Delete, block, move on with your life.

What do you care if you have no account there?

I mean, besides it being a scam or not, how could it "be bad" if you ignore it? xD Is not like the Diablo police is going to come out of your computer and arrest you or something :/

It's definitely a scam, I remember hearing about it. Report it to Blizzard, then delete the email and proceed to give no fucks.

Serious account-related correspondence from Blizzard will always address you by the name your account is under. They only use cheesy mass-mail salutations for advertising and promotions.
