I agree that her being naive and young IS an extremely large part of her character and definitely at least one of the "points" of the movie. I also think that given what we see of her life pre-labyrinth, there's like an 85% chance that she's still a virgin.

BUT, like was said downthread, her youth and naivete and the resultant power imbalance is NOT directly correlated to her virginity in any way. Just because a person hasn't had sex doesn't mean they are automatically "weaker" than anyone else.

Thank you! Just because someone is a virgin does not make them any less! His powers in the movie do seem to be controlled by her anyway, so saying she has no power in the relationship seems weird.

Virgins are not powerless people!

See, I am also a virgin, and there's so many stereotypes about the "young, virginal girl" that it pisses me right off! In today's media, it's just as embarrassing to be a virgin as it is to be a "slut" (not my word, just using it to make a point). How many times you have had sex should not matter to anyone except yourself, and perhaps your partner/s!

Also yes, Jareth was absolutely the one under Sarah's control in that movie, in terms of what he could choose to do. Unfortunately, Sarah's imagination was her own worst enemy. What she expected him to do was what he was ABLE to do.

yeah and the problem is that everyone has their own idea of the right number of people a girl SHOULD have slept with. One? Frigid. ..More than one? Slut.
So basically we lose no matter what, and should therefore ignore it entirely.

If people think that having only one partner means I'm frigid, that's on them. Nothing wrong with only one, especially when that one knows just how to make my toes curl. :3

Yeah. I "lost" mine fairly "early" IMO but even still it was treated as "OMG you still ARE?" by some people because I was -- gasp -- 18! A friend of mine who is in her 30s and waiting for the Right Person has dealt with so much crap from people trying to set her up and pushing her to "just get rid of it" and "just get it over with". Which, it's perfectly fine for people to feel that way about themselves but it's not cool to push your preferences on other -- no matter what they are.

I had "friends" in high school who were constantly telling me they'd set me up so I could shed the Virgin label. "We're gonna throw a party, get you drunk, and get you laid!"
Oh, yes, because passing out and having no idea what happened with whom, if condoms were used, or if incriminating photos were taken is soooo much better than just abstaining. I ended up waiting until I was 29, and it was fantastic. I have a friend who is 31 and contemplating her first, and I am being a better friend by listening to her concerns and giving advice and support... and not offering to get her drunk. *lol*

No, but her age is the point. She's generally inexperienced in the world. Coincidentally, that includes lacking sexual experience. And this movie is from the 80s.

True, it is an 80's movie. But since the OP takes virginity as separate from the movie characterization, and specifically as something that causes further power imbalance, I got a bit pissed off.
