In my personal opinion, it comes down to who's the girlfriend.

Peggy: military background, clearly has her own life/goals, clearly moved on when Steve "died." She and Steve fell in love, yes, but it wasn't on purpose, they just clicked, and it wasn't "female character falls for ladies' man male character."

Pepper: never moved on. Didn't even look for another job when pretty much everyone thought Tony was dead. Jealous of the other ladies in his life, runs his company, attends his functions, waits on him essentially. That's pretty much all we've seen her character do--she takes almost no initiative of her own, and even when she's stealing files or something, it's because Tony told her to. She was much better in the Avengers than IM/IM2, but she didn't have a great basis.

Also, considering Tony's background with women, I have a hard time getting in that "she must be the one!" mentality that makes for happy shipping times for me.

You don't know what Pepper did while Tony was in the cave. It's never alluded to. Also, the man ran an empire. She would be needed to get everything in order after his "passing". She could probably work for the new CEO.

When was she ever jealous? Why is running his company a bad thing? How is running his company waiting on him?

I see a lot of assumptions here anon.

Where in the world did you get "Jealous of the other ladies in his life"? If this is about that taking out the trash comment from the first movie, I'mma have to stop you there. That comment was in retaliation to Everhart essentially calling her a maid.

She did get irritated/possibly jelly about Natalie during IM2 but since she thought that she was a bad influence on Tony I think Pepper's dislike was understandable.

I honestly do not remember much of IM2 but what I do remember is Pepper and Natalie seeming to team up against Tony at some point after he royally fucks up.

And can you honestly tell me you personally would not feel even vaguely uncomfortable at the idea of your barely controllable ex-boss, who you still have to deal with on an extremely regular basis and has a reputation as a playboy, in a relationship with your new PA, who you've seen knock a big guy flat on his back and can probably fill out sexual harassment files that you're probably going to have to deal with?

So. As someone who really Stans for Pepper, I gotta ask- where's the beef in that statement?

The one and only time it comes to a head is when Tony's part is getting COMPLETELY out of control. Other than that? Pep keeps it on the professional down-low, not to mention she knows to put the jealousy card back in the deck when TONY CRASHES THROUGH THE CEILING.

I like how you translated an entirely playful "I hate job hunting" into Pepper never getting out of bed because she thought Tony was dead. (And I don't remember how long Steve was supposed to be gone, but it's not like taking some time to grieve would make her a weak person anyhow.)

...why would she look for another job? Why would she "move on" after just three months? They were still looking for Tony, and I assume she'd be the next CEO's PA if he was dead -- I mean, she later became CEO, and someone capable of running a multi-billion dollar company is not exactly any old interchangeable secretary that Tony just happened to personally like who would be out on her ass when he died.

Also, not sure what your last point means. It's not like Tony's a serial monogamist with a string of failed long-term relationships in his wake, he was a playboy who casually slept around with loads of random women without having any relationships with them. Kind of a big distinction.

I assume she'd be the next CEO's PA if he was dead

Yup. My aunt used to be the PA of a CEO. The CEO died. My aunt is now the PA of the new CEO.

At minimum, Pepper would have been asked to stay to help with the transition to a new CEO and that CEO's PA, so walking out the instant Tony vanished would make no sense. In fact, it would reflect poorly on her work ethic, since her leaving suddenly would probably cause a lot of trouble for other people at Stark Industries.

*snorts*

um, look, Pepper may have been jealous, but I seriously would NOT use that as a criticism when you're comparing her to the woman who shot at the guy she liked when she caught him kissing another woman.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I like to forget about that, but yeah, wow Peggy.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner!

Which is why in MCU Pepper > Peggy to me any day of the week.
