Re: HAES
(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 01:17 am (UTC)(link)I really dislike the HAES movement and I think it pushes some very unhealthy mindsets. No, you CANNOT be "healthy" at any size. I am not healthy at my current size, when I was very underweight I was not healthy either. There are many health problems directly linked to very high and very low weight that go beyond the obvious heart problems and diabetes. There's skin discoloration, sleep apnea, shortness of breath, and about a million other things.
But, you can be beautiful and deserving of respect at any size. If the HAES movement was the BAES movement or the RAES movement, I'd have nothing but respect for them. As it is, they diminish the very real risks of being on the extreme ends of the scale and often engage in shaming behaviors toward women who are trying to lose weight for health and/or personal reasons. I've seen way too many overweight women get attacked in HAES spaces for speaking out about their own health issues.
