I don't understand how prevalent the "I can't do the RPS thing" is. A vast majority of the population fantasize about people in a sexual way. People check each other out on the street, in the subway, at bars, etc. To me, RPS is like seeing two attractive people on the street and wanting to watch them make out. Just with celebrities. Which somehow makes it wrong, whereas fantasizing about someone you have a crush on is not wrong, or fantasizing about two random attractive people having sex is not wrong. WTF?

In my humble opinion, fantasizing about you and other people is completely different from fantasizing about other people fucking each other. The later seems kind of voyeuristic.

Becase voyeurism without agreement isn't right? Fantasizing about two random people having sex is swappable. Anyone'll do. Fantasizing about a specific person with a name and family and their own personal life isn't swappable.

Plus, you don't have any control over how you're depicted in the sexual stories. You can be a rapist or a slut. You can be having the best sex of your life or you can be tortured and mutilated. You can tell people you don't want the stories to be shared but you can't stop people from sharing stories. You might think that someone sharing sexual stories of you on the internet with the entire world is okay and others might think it is not okay. Is it so inconceivable that other people's thoughts on sex and sexual fantasies involving people in real life are different from yours?

I don't RPS because I don't want to imagine what my friends do in the bedroom, much less celebrities. I don't care if you RPS in your head. If there are RPS stories of people I know, I rather not know about it.

I think a line is crossed when people send links or actual materials to the celebrities, or pester them in public, or stalk them, or harass them, or send death threats to someone they perceive as "interfering with the pairing" or what have you.

But people imagining celebrities having sex and sharing stories with fellow fans? I don't see that as a line being crossed. Plenty of people have fantasies about celebrities, writing them up and sharing them with like-minded people seems pretty harmless to me.
Plus, they're labeled as RPS or with the celebrities' names, so they're pretty easy to avoid if they freak you out or squick you or whatever. Some communities on LJ even say "no RPS" and have separate communities for RPS stuff. There's certain types of fanfic I don't care for, so I read the warnings and author's notes and then I pass them over. If someone wants to write a story about my favorite character getting killed off, or an RPS fic where an actor gets stage 3 cancer, or something that contains a fic that squicks me out, I just don't read it, I skip over it and go read something else instead.
