So, tough week or so for Republicans, eh?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
◦Ann Coulter with her usage of the word ‘retard’.

◦Richard Murdouck saying “I struggled with myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that is something God intended to happen.”.

◦Donald Trump offering $5 million dollars to a charity of Obama’s choice, if Obama releases his passport and college records.

I don't think there's anything the right can say anymore to shock me :S

I thought polls only stuck to a very small sample size and weren't totally accurate...maybe in a 70% ballpark.

It's not unfortunately.

However, by most metrics Obama has a (just) statistically significant lead.

Polls aim for a sample size large enough to give them a 95% confidence interval.

That's what they say, anyway...

Getting more and more nervous about this election every day tbh.

Man I wish someone would ask Sarah Palin about that Coulter thing. Except I don't, because every time Coulter says something terrible I wish we would, as a society, stop paying attention to it.

She's too busy saying outright racist crap on Twitter and Facebook anyway.

Re: So, tough week or so for Republicans, eh?

It's kind of amazing, if you think about it, that Ann Coulter barely gets in the news anymore - she used to be SO shocking and out there, and now she's very much run-of-the-mill for a conservative activist.

The thing that worries me the most, I guess, or that I see as the most negative is the Murdouck thing - because as long as there was only one Senatorial candidate with insane thoughts about rape, it was possible to regard him as a lone maniac. But now there's two people with insane opinions about rape, and that makes it a lot harder. It seems like this is actually a mainstream position within the Republican Party - something that many Republicans actually believe on the far right wing of the party. And that's just incredibly horrifying and mind-breaking, that a significant political faction in our republic believes these things about rape that are so opposed to any kind of reason, common sense, or decency - that are actually indefensible. To me, this is on a level beyond anything that the Republican party has previously done.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It terrifies me because we already know that some think there is such a thing as "legitimate rape", Paul Ryan has said in the past he doesn't believe in -any- exceptions, now...now this guy thinks a baby caused by rape was supposed to happen. I just...would not be surprised if this leads to "You must carry your rape-baby because god wanted you to have it!"

Or, in a case where the mother's life is in danger: "You must carry this fetus to term and risk death because God wouldn't have let you get pregnant if he didn't want you to have this baby."

Re: So, tough week or so for Republicans, eh?

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-10-24 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't you hear? Rep. Joe Walsh says no pregnancy ever threatens the mother's life because of medical advancements so abortions are totes unnecessary for life-saving!

What terrifies me even more than the ones with the extreme-but-steadily-becoming-mainstream views are the ones who don't have those views, but just don't care, or don't think it's a serious issue, and they'll either vote for those politicians, or not at all.

I don't like the fact that Coulter is getting attention as no doubt that's exactly what that tweet was intended for but if just one person who isn't a complete write off takes this letter to heart I'll consider it a win.

She replied to the outcry by saying "The only people who will be offended are too retarded to understand"

She's about as desperate as Trump is now, IMO.

And IIRC, she did that AFTER receiving a very eloquent response from a man with Down syndrome explaining why what she did was offensive.

So, yeah.

Yeah, this is just a terrifying election year for me, especially considering there are people out there who wholeheartedly agree with them. And the guy who said the health of the mother is a BS reason for abortion because medicine has totally erased all the dangers of any pregnancy. I guess my cousin's Preeclampsia, that thank god did not cause her to lose her baby, or die was just all in our heads, as was my friend's ectopic pregnancy.

I did laugh at Trump, he just seems so desperate to stay in the headlines, or something.

Don't forget:

◦Sarah Palin accusing Obama of "shucking and jiving".
