Question. TW for eating disorders (maybe)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I sit down and eat way too much and end up uncomfortably full. It's a habit from being raised to see leaving food on the plate as bad. Usually I don't overeat, but when I do, I go puke it out and feel better. This happens maybe once a month at events like family dinners where people keep piling food on, or the meal lasts for so long I forgot how much I ate.

Now people are concerned I'm bulimic or something. Is there any truth to that if this has nothing to do with body image? Or can I tell them they're being too concerned?

I don't think I'd say full on bulimic, but it is troublesome. And eating disorders do not always have to do with body image. It does sound like you might have vague disordered eating. Can't stop, overeating, issues with food, and purging are not considered "normal" in regards to a relationship with food. Either way it's definitely unhealthy.

So how does your family even know? Are you pretty open about the puking thing?

It doesn't sound quite right. People usually just sit back and digest when they eat so much they're uncomfortable, they don't go throw it up. Overeating is uncomfortable, sure, but it shouldn't make you want to puke.

If you overeat so much you actually need to throw up, that's a problem. If you hate the feeling of being too full so much you would rather go make yourself throw up than deal with the feeling of being too full for a while, that's also a problem.

I'd say you have a problem with overeating. Normal people don't have issues with stopping when full, or being so full or uncomfortable that they feel the need to purge, or even really think about puking as a viable option.

One thing about disordered eating is that it's often about control, and not solely a response to a negative body image.

I don't think you have a serious problem, but you should consider why you're responding this way to a specific situation. Do you overeat because you're afraid of offending someone by not eating everything they offer you, and stay at the dinner table because leaving early (even if you're full) is seen as bad manners? There are other responses to these kinds of concerns, and it would be helpful to ask yourself why you choose to purge instead of saying "No" or leaving the table when you're getting full.

If you start to feel too full then just stop eating. If someone tries to add things on your plate to eat then be insistent that they don't do that.

A cup of hot water or tea helps you digest food faster. Sip some of that over a period of time instead of throwing things up.

you're not bulimic, but your habit of overeating to such an extent that you have to vomit seems a bit off. someone may argue that it was natural in some older cultures (ie. the vomitorium myth) but it really never was, at least to my knowledge, so you may want to see a nutritionist or doctor of some sort to figure out the best way to wean yourself off of this habit.
