Occasionally I'd like to give out anti-kudos or negative points to fics when I can't understand how they have managed to get so much kudos in the first place. Wait, I do know the answer: porn, no matter how ooc or badly written it might be.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I just want a "this was a terrible fic and you wasted my unpaid for time" button.

I assume when my hits go up but the kudos don't that people hated the fic, so there's that. Not that I'm always obsessively vigilant about my hits, but sometimes you notice.

It doesn't necessarily mean that they hated it. Many people just don't bother to leave kudos on older fic or they could be reading it again.

What do you consider a good hit to kudos ratio to be? I don't know of any story out there that has it 1:1. My kudos are about 3% or so. Should I hang my head in shame? I'm only mostly kidding about that. ;)

[personal profile] ninety6tears 2012-10-25 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Well, even like a 10:1 ratio I would think is getting quite a lot, it's only when the hits are climbing really fast with no result that I would really notice (hits should always be a good amount higher anyway, because people will reread or visit the page just to bookmark, etc.)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
30 hits to 1 kudo at minimum, 25 hits to 1 kudo preferred. It works for the Avengers fandom but I don't know if it works for other fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I look for similar ratios on fic -- but multi-chapter fics tend to have far worse ratios, and I can't decide how to adjust for that. Like for a ten chapter fic, do you assume each kudo counts x10? Or x5? Or just figure no matter what you do, the ratio will be wildly inaccurate.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
No, I take my baseline ratio and add a couple of hits for word count, chapter count, and how long since the first chapter was published. The total hits matter too - I'll read something with 60 hits to 1 kudo if it has 10,000 hits or more but I probably won't read something with 45 hits to 1 kudo if it has less than 5000 hits.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-10-25 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Um, because of this comment I just found out you can leave kudos without an ao3 account. So thank you!

And maybe some of your hits were from dumbasses like me who didn't know what to say in a comment and just slunk off?

And maybe some of your hits were from dumbasses like me who didn't know what to say in a comment and just slunk off? LOL, we've all done it. I don't know, I just figure it can't possibly be that hard to just click the kudos button if they didn't dislike the fic? But maybe people really do save them for the really good exceptional stuff.

I was kind of suggesting that I might not be the only accountless reader who didn't know kudos were for everybody but weren't up to a whole comment?

And for what it's worth I do like to reread things so maybe some of your hits are from people who've already kudos'ed?

[personal profile] ninety6tears 2012-10-25 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see. I've done the same just out of forgetting I hadn't kudo'd when I was busy bookmarking or whatever. Anyway, this is all turning into some "How dare people not leave kudos if they liked the fic!?" overanalysis I didn't quite mean to imply.

I tend to only kudos if I really, really liked (general) your fic. As in, I thought it was above average.

So people's standards of Kudos giving may be different from yours.

A lot of people don't leave kudos for porn, actually. They just kind of uh... use it and move on.

I'll admit myself guilty of this.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Then comment.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Then we should do away with kudos because you could just comment and leave approval? If you can say you liked something via a button, it's reasonable to want to be able to dislike something via a button.

This is like me saying I want a cherry flavored lollipop and you saying I should just eat a cherry. It does not address or even comprehend the issue.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I feel criticism should take more effort, that's all. A dislike button would be overused and skew results, as I'm sure you well know (backlash on popular fics is one thing that comes to mind.) Kudos are the equivalent of an "I liked it" comment for most people, though, which is fair. Those are really common to get.

A comment that says "I disliked it" isn't enough, however. There should really be an explanation for that, or else how are people supposed to get better? If you dislike a story enough that you have to point it out (for no good reason, I might add) then you may as well take the time to explain. Don't be lazy anon.

wow this might actually be the most ridiculous comment i remember reading on f!s.

maybe this comment would be relevant if you were actually paying anything for these fics. but these fics are free and you made the conscious decision to click on the fic. if you got there via rec, you made the conscious decision to trust that rec. if you got there via looking at the kudos, you made the conscious decision to trust the kudos count. if you can't figure out whether or not a fic will be to your taste after reading the summary/tags and the first few paragraphs, then that's your problem.

nobody owes you jackshit in fandom, sry2say.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Anon clearly addressed that time wasnt being paid for. This isn't about owing people anything: it's about having the opposite of something already in place. Kudos are used for two reasons: 1) to indicate personal approval; and 2) to give an indication to others how popular the fic is. Sometimes fics get kudos that seem to be completely off the ball, and that's what a lot of the commenters want to balance out.
augustbird: (Default)

[personal profile] augustbird 2012-10-25 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
.........sorry no, kudos are used for one reason: to indicate personal approval

if you want to use number of kudos as an indication of how good a fic is going to be, that's your own choice. plenty of readers don't give a fuck about the number of kudos a fic has and judge the fic by content and writing style, myself included. if you think that certain fics deserve more recognition than others, please do rec the fuck out of them and ignore the ones you don't like.

also, "and you wasted my unpaid for time" -- i was addressing the fact that the anon who posted this thinks that it was the author's fault for wasting their time. if the anon was paying other writers to churn out fic that they didn't like, that would be a completely different story. but as it stands, everyone is getting fic for free. so if reading fic is such a hardship, stop doing it.

LOL THE INJUSTICE!!!!!

so now, you can grow a brain and learn that in reality, kudos count means exactly as much as hit count when it comes to a fic's quality. Capisce?

Look at that, you're taking your first baby steps in learning how to use the internet for yourself.

lol ikr? some salty, SALTY-ass bitches in this thread.

This is pretty much the perfect description of the bane of fandom. You see that fic that's got all the Kudos and comments and go to read it and it's just some terrible OOC porn fic. :/ I'd love to give anti-kudos or negative kudos for those as well.
