There are stories with great openings but sucky endings that I wish I can take my kudos back from. Now I'm not giving kudos to any stories unless they're complete and they're good throughout.

Or maybe there could be two numbers counted. We could have the normal 'Kudos' and then have a 'Disapproval' button for those fics you really didn't like? But that might be abused...

Eh. I see what you mean, but I give kudos to things that I enjoyed. If I liked something enough to read the whole thing or check back every week (even if I stopped reading after something irritated me - which has happened), then I'll give kudos. I've never wanted to take back kudos, but I have wanted to take back good reviews. (But, deleting them would be shitty, so I won't do that.)

Occasionally I'd like to give out anti-kudos or negative points to fics when I can't understand how they have managed to get so much kudos in the first place. Wait, I do know the answer: porn, no matter how ooc or badly written it might be.

I hit the kudos button whenever the fic doesn't completely suck. It is a little annoying to see a terrible fic with 3 million kudos, and I would totally give un-kudos if I could, but I'm glad I can't Fandom doesn't need extra pettiness.

See other than being embarrassed about liking something that you now feel ashamed of liking I can't imagine why you would want to take a kudos back. The fic got boring? Ok so walk away and don't read it again. It went somewhere you don't like, same solution. The only thing that would be different is if the fic was offensive in some way, but then I'd imagine that commenting and mentioning the problematic element would be far more helpful than simply removing a kudos.

I left kudos on that Hockey RPF fic that the author later comprehensively edited and relabeled as Original Fic. I really want to be able to un-kudos that story; I feel as though I basically never even read the story that my kudos are now attached to.

Sort of the way YouTube has a like/dislike function ... it's an interesting idea, but I don't want to see that implemented on the AO3, because there's such a disparity between fandoms. In some fandoms, a lot of dislikes could mean you can't spell or use grammar, but in others, it could just mean that you write for Hated Minority Pairing.

I really feel like I can evaluate negative comments better than I can evaluate a down vote, and that's important to me. Whereas kudos don't really influence what I read at all. I consider them more like candy for the author, and that's about it. I look at the summary, see if the premise appeals to me, and maybe read the story reviews. But if you're going to go out of your way to give someone a downer, I'd rather that be something that takes actual effort and thought. Not something accidental, like "I pushed the wrong button." I realize you can accidentally send a kudos, but ... put it this way, a lot of authors I value are sensitive about what other people think of them. I don't want them stressing over what having their fic disliked means when it could mean just about anything, from "a troll went by" to "I think your story is horrible" because they're more likely to assume the latter. I prioritize having a community that can shield its (what is it, optimistically 20%) of creators from uncommunicative disapproval. That's worth it to me, even if it means that I frown at a few stories that I wouldn't take the time to criticize.

I do get what you're saying in relation to stories that have thousands of kudos and really disappoint you, but I don't like what an across the board "have a down vote!" would probably do in relation to authors who write well and still only get a little tinder pile of kudos. I think in the long run, you'd be making people feel like the only writers who really belong on AO3 are the BNFs.

i think that having a downvote/dislike/whatever the fuck button on a fic would probably only increase the disparity between widely read authors and lesser known authors. plus, way the fuck more tedious drama. plus people who aren't particularly confident about their work (whether or not it's justified) might stop contributing (at least on that platform) and for the tinier fandoms, that would be a fucking travesty. if ao3 implemented something like that, i would predict a shift back to posting on lj or the rise of a new site.

if you don't like a fic, leave some constructive criticism. this isn't reddit where the op put three seconds of work into finding a picture from the internet--these writers have probably spent hours of their time and effort on these fics.

orrrrrrrr if you don't like a fic, stop fucking reading. seriously. don't waste any more of your time and look for another fic. or write the fic you want to read. writers aren't obligated to cater to your every interest, just as the potential audience isn't obligated to read or comment.
