Wow I am not reading all that bullshit

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, all kpop secrets are like two thousand words long. What is up with that.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's not like any other tl;dr secrets ever get posted.

...

Oh wait.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
Kpop or otherwise, long, meandering secrets are bad and should feel bad.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
They do. But kpop secrets are almost universally this way.

Seriously, this comment is stupid.

"Most of your shirts are blue."
"OH, 'CAUSE IT'S NOT LIKE ANYONE ELSE HAS BLUE SHIRTS?!"

I think for the most part most people tend to go one or the other, in terms of what they favor? I'm thinking more of the Jpop fandom, though. For example, I'm pretty much exclusively in the girl group side of things and I follow a LOT of girl groups, but I just don't care one bit about the guy groups. Personal preference, I guess.

I'm assuming you're a girl, OP. I'm a female and although I like some girl groups' music, I don't generally get into them the way I get into boy groups. The boys are just funnier and more interesting in my opinion, and that seems to be the majour consensus from girls...but men are less likely to think so. This is just from what I've seen of the kpop fandom.

I would suggest trying female soloists, especially BoA, Ailee, IU, and Lee Hyori. Somehow I find it easier to care about them than girl groups in general.

^ Everything I wanted to say.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
funnier? oh please. this is the 'women aren't funny' trope wrapped up in some new packaging.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
There is some of that, definitely. However I (as a K-Pop fan who admittedly tends to prefer boy group-based shenangians, much like in many other genres of music) haven't seen nearly as many girl groups/girl group members given the opportunity to make complete fools of themselves at the same level as BAP's reality show.

If there are any, please tell me about them! I love me some public ridiculousness.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
It might be less women aren't funny and more women aren't allowed to be funny. As in by the people marketing these pop groups. At least that is what I noticed when I was in the asian pop scene. Boy groups were allowed this image of boyish dorky funny silly rolling around puppies who play pranks on each other; meanwhile girl groups were set up with this far more subdued, demure childish/innocent image without any of the pranking and rolling around.

I mean, it has been a while since I was into the entire thing, maybe shit has changed, but eh.

And I'm a female k-pop fan who despises most male groups and their fans who are always "OPPAR DIDN'T MEAN IT, GET AWAY FROM HIM, YOU SLUTWHORE!"

I much prefer the female soloists/groups.

Quit making generalizations.

You just generalized male group fans...who are you to tell me not to make generalizations? I'll stand by what I said; thanks though.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
ok but.....why? why don't you like girl groups? as an avid girl group fan, most of the reasons people give are ridiculous and make me side eye so. i'm interested.

[personal profile] levache 2012-10-28 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the one who made the secret, but I feel the same way. My reason is pretty simple. When I first was getting into k-pop, I tried out both girl and guy groups. I didn't like the focus on being cutesy and overly sexy that the girl groups had. The boy groups seemed "cooler," and I tend to avoid things I find trying too hard to be sexy. The songs themselves didn't have the same impact (though that point is probably because I wasn't looking too hard). So my initial experiences have basically dictated how I feel about boy and girl groups. I don't know the reasoning the OP had, but that's just my experience!

I'd be interested to hear from the other side though (so to speak).

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Why I feel guilty is because there's no good reason for it. I don't think the male groups are in any way superior, and I often like the girl's music just as much, I just... have a harder time staying focused on them, I guess?

That's why I feel bad I guess, is apparently my brain is just less good at paying attention to / remembering girls. ._.;

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Different anon. I like a whole lot of girl group music, but other than one or two members (in each band) I find it harder to remember names/get really invested in all of the members of a band. It seems like a lot of the sub-vocalists and suchlike aren't given as much of an opportunity to distinguish themselves?

Like, it's hard to avoid knowing Himchan's name, despite the fact that he has very little to do in any given B.A.P song, because he's The Guy With The Freaky Eyes and has at least one moment in each song where he gives the camera the crazy eyes, but the fourth girl in Secret (The one who isn't Hyosung, Jieun, or Zinger) has never had enough of a stand out moment that I remembered 'Oh yeah, that's Sunhwa.' (I just had to look up her name, hopefully this conversation will help me remember it.) And I feel bad about it, because I like knowing the names of people, but she just doesn't stick out?

Like, I don't experience it as a failing of the girls so much as their styling and style of performance tends to be a lot more "look at all of these pretty ladies" rather than each member having a specific schtick and sticking to it, which is how I more or less got to the point that I can ID all of the members of Infinite. (God, why are there so many members in Infinite.)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
(Same anon)

The reason I don't like/get SNSD is because they ping all of my horrid creepy expoitation of girlishness as a sexualized category feels. I really like all of the members I've encountered in other formats, and really enjoyed the TaeTiSeo promotions, but every time they show up in a full-group performance with, like, pigtails and short-shorts I get majorly creeped out.

Nothing on the girls themselves, everything to do with how SM promotes and styles them. Early Britney Spears freaked me out for exactly the same reason. (Which is super sad, because early SNSD was super cute, and then at some point it stopped being cute-cute and started being sexy-cute and I got majorly creeped out. Sigh.)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeahm I like boy groups a lot more than girl groups too...I had a while where I was like 'omg how shallow am I?', but it's really because I don't like most girl-group concepts. I don't like super cutesy (especially with squeaky aegyo voices) or super sexy, and that's most of the groups' concepts right there. I do like some that aren't those styles, like Secret or Brown Eyed Girls.

As for not recognizing them, I think they cast much more narrowly to the Korean 'ideal beauty' than boy groups do, or go under the knife much more frequently. So the members of Infinite seem more different from each other to the casual watcher than the members of Girls' Day. (although I have trouble with Infinite too, lol, which is Woohyun and which is L again? ><)

You... remembered most of their heights off the top of your head? Do you not have anything better to do with your time?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, that would let you play a fun drinking game. A shot for every shoelift one of the members is wearing! Lets see, he's actually 165cm tall, but today he's as tall as Siwon who's 185cm...three shoelifts! *drinks* Or a drink for every fake centimeter, if you want to get really smashed. XD

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
God, Ryeowook's entire existence would get me so, so smashed. Especially any time KRY does promotions, because Kyu's 5'10 1/2" and Yesung is 5'10" and Ryeowook... Isn't.

Really, really isn't. The milk crate sized box he was standing on in the most recent KRY photo shoot was amazing.

OP... In your SNSD picture, it's (from left to right): Yoona, Yuri, Taeyeon, Sooyoung, Jessica, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Seohyun, Sunny (not sure, though - the pictures are tiny and I'm not wearing my glasses).

I'm pretty much the exact opposite - I know SNSD off by heart, same with 2NE1, Miss A, Brown Eyed Girls, Hello Venus, EvoL, Wonder Girls, and possibly a few others (I can identify Nana, E-Young, Raina, Kaeun, Kahi, Bekah and UEE in After School, for example), but aside from Norazo (who have two members), I really couldn't tell you who's who in any male groups.
