That gave me such a case of the giggles. Oh my gosh that sound.

OP

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WAS GOING FOR.

CARRY ON.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I make this noise at least once a week when it comes to stupidity on the internet. (Who doesn't?)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I can't judge you. It's amazing how negativity over trivial things can ruin your day. If you want your fandom to be a happy place, there's nothing wrong with that.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay, OP. I'm mostly the same way, but slowly I'm learning not to get too invested in fandom internet debates, that it's completely okay if I just don't respond and let them be stupid and stay cool-headed. It's something that, with practice, we can do. You don't have to let anger about people being stupid on the Internet control your life! You can take back control over your own life!

This sounds like a motivational speech! A good one though.

You don't have to let anger about people being stupid on the Internet control your life!

Agreed.
intrigueing: (no hard feelings point break)

It's pretty much just a "the more you do it, the easier it gets" deal. You get conditioned to recognize trolls and laugh at idiots. You learn how to fight and bicker and wank and rant without getting upset or distracted IRL. You learn how be passionate and emotionally invested and sincere about things that are important to you, but compartmentalize it so that you can switch your feelings off when you close your laptop to get on with your life.

It's like any other social situation -- the more you have to deal with it, the less you notice all the stupid shit. It slowly fades into baseline obstacles and background noise.

ETA: oh, I actually just gotta tell you one of the things that helped me a lot: I went to a KKK website and looked at the ridiculous shit people get up to there. Then I pounded into my head the idea that if people that stupid exist in the world, a lot of the people who have upset me in other parts of the internet are just as stupid as them, and really -- being insulted or disliked or disagreed with by people that stupid? It's a compliment.

I don't know, I've been in fandom and on the internet for quite a long time and I still rage over trolls and have a hard time laughing it off. Which is why I don't comment much or will disappear for long stretches, because the rage is too much and I need to step back.

Internet conversations aren't like real life conversations. In real life, people have to face real consequences if they're a dick, like my foot in their ass. On the internet, they can be as douchey as they like and nobody'll punch them in the face for it. Until I track them down.

They're also not like real life in that people don't have to live up to their threats

streetcake: (HS- What the eff??)

[personal profile] streetcake 2012-10-27 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like the way the whole "wah, people being mean to me on the internet" thing is being used a response to anybody who doesn't like to get undeserved hassling online.

Since the internet gives people the anonymity mask, it's easier for people to be meaner than if they were saying it to your face. And since a lot of people go on the internet to do fun things like fandom, it's a bit jarring to get such disproportionally angry responses to innocent opinions and discussion.

I don't see what the big deal is to vent every once in a while about how bothersome it can be. It's not gonna go away though, and if you train yourself to ignore or laugh at them it does get easier over time, OP.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-10-27 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, people stalk and harass you for not liking something?

Holy shit, I thought that only happened in SJW situations. Great, the human race has just lost even more points with me.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, people on the internet can be giant douchenozzles, but the best way to handle trolling and flaming and such is not to take it so personally. That's what I do. Just let it roll off like water off a duck's back, and stay calm and composed. People get intimidated when others are calm, cool and collected in their responses. Nothing like an intelligent response to get people freaked out.

[personal profile] velvet_mace 2012-10-28 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Well to be absolutely honest, that sounds rather like you are able to dish things out but you aren't able to take them. You want to be argumentative and tell people how wrong they are, but you don't want them arguing back with you and telling you the same thing. You want people to know you are opinionated and strident, but only if they agree with you. You want those who are upset by your opinions to not connect them to you. You are right to realize that the internet doesn't work that way. You can't just get the good, and ignore the bad.

There's really two ways to deal with this. First is to do all your arguing anon, so you can walk away and never have it follow you. Sure you won't get positive attention for your opinions but then you also won't have to deal with getting negative attention.

The second is to step back and think: yes, I have this opinion and I think these people are totally wrong, but do I really need to tell them about it? Is it worth the wank and aggravation? Haters gonna hate, and these people are nuts.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Or alternately, some people on the internet don't recognize polite disagreement and react with vitriol and shittiness when it isn't called for.

If people expect to see nastiness because they are nasty people, it's kind of hard to explain to them that "I don't see this the same way you do" is not the same as "OMG UR WRONG AND ALSO YOUR MOM".

[personal profile] velvet_mace 2012-10-28 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
While you are right, there are people who will take the most polite disagreement and react as if you've just killed their cat and peed on their cornflakes. I've been on the receiving end of that. I don't think that's what's being talked about here. Polite disagreement usually doesn't come with a whole bunch of all caps and key smashing rage, which this OP is saying is her natural reaction to people stating things she doesn't agree with.

I applaud the OP for stopping herself from unleashing her rage on the internet, but if she's going to be flashing unpopular opinions around people who have already stated they feel very strongly about a subject, she's going to have to expect that they probably aren't going to agree with her, and may not be very polite about it.

I'm sure this wasn't intended to be funny, but it really really is. Imagine, people who get all roll on the floor fucked up because someone's expressing and stalwartly supporting their opinion on the internet.

Clearly you fit in just fine on the internet, in the very special WHY ARE THEY BEING SO STUPID section.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Because recognizing that sometimes you are irrational and taking steps to prevent stupid decisions is exactly what people on the internet do all the time.

Oh, wait.
