I don't know, I've seen "bisexuality exists!!!" as a premise to slash characters who have straight relationships in canon more often than I've seen what you're describing. Far more often. Probably depends on the fandom, ages, etc., but it's certainly been the case in my experience.

In fact, that in and of itself can get a little tiresome. Of course bisexuality exists. But not everyone is bi. Closeted gay men also exist. Some of them with very understanding partners. Also, people who are asexual, poly, etc.

Closeted gay men also exist.

Well, I think it's understandable since I've seen a lot of fic that uses being closeted as a plot point to pack their fic full of drama. A lot of people are tired of tragic gays in media and adding a used ex-gf to the mix doesn't make it better, so they would rather avoid it if necessary.

That isn't to say I haven't ever read good fic with that sort of plot.

I'd avoid anything that tried to tear down the dude's canon female love interest for the audacity of having a vagina, whether it was a "closet" plot or not. But she could be well aware of it and love him anyway (as a BFF) or might even be in the closet herself...

I'm tired of tragic gays, too, but I'm also tired of "everyone is bisexual" because they're, well, not. A nice mix'd be I ideal, I think.

There is good fic that deals with characters being gay and closeted, so I guess it being good depends on whether the author is writing it for ~drama~ or for character/relationship exploration.
