I'm intrigued!

Can you elaborate to me what character study even means?
/new to fandom, can you tell?

It's when you analyze a character by writing about their behaviors, personality, things they do and how they react to different situations.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, in my case I just don't find ghosts interesting. I don't really have an idea of what a ghost is/could be in my head so I just blank on reading them or what could happen.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm mainly a shipper, so ghosts don't really interest me. Sorry. :(

...Shit, good point. I read a brilliant Dean/Cas fic once where they had this hot-but-tragic relationship and at the end it was revealed that Dean was Dead All Along and wouldn't move on, etc. It was great. Now I'm wondering how I can mess with the ghost idea in my other fandoms...

While we're reccing Destiel fic that has "a ghost all along" as a reveal at the end - Ghost of Embers by Moorish Flower is freaking amazing.

Did someone ask for a recs post??????

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-10-28 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
No one asked? Well, nvm, I'm starting one anyway!

From The Avengers comes "The Soft Star-Shine At Night" by the awesome margo_kim. If anyone's interested, the ghost in question is Yinsen.

Unfortunately, that's the only rec I can think of off the top of my head because I happened to be discussing this very author just yesterday. Which is strange because I'm really into Star Wars fandom and logically there ought to be a whole lot of force-ghost action going on there. But I never really thought about "ghostfic" as a category/genre, so...eh. Whatever.

Shameless self-promotion! Find Me. Please read and heed the warnings; nothing bad happens "on screen", but there are unpleasant implications throughout.

I recced this recently to someone who wanted Homestuck fics, but The Hope of Only Empty Men is what I immediately thought of when I saw this secret. It's Jade/Rose, and I think the prompt was "ghost story/roadtrip fusion". It's the only "ghostfic" I know of but like I said above, I'm intrigued by the idea. I like writing original fic about ghosts so idk why I never thought of it.

I'd rec one, but I'm afraid I've lost the bookmark. Does anyone have a link to the TF2 fic where Soldier is being haunted by Demoman's ghost? I remember it being very touching.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always been interested in this. I haven't written ghostfic per se, but something similar, and it was fairly well-received. But anyway, yeah, I agree. I love this kind of thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I am right fucking there with you, especially with regards to fandoms that would have no problems pulling it off. When I've only ever found 3 Ghostbusters fics where one of the guys bites it and sticks around, there is something wrong with the world.

[personal profile] serenitysquid 2012-10-28 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
YES! This is one of the very few things I can never find good fic for. It's strange how so many huge fandoms are lacking in ghost!fic when they have no shortage of zombie apocalypse AUs and space opera AUs and wizard AUs and implausible crossovers.

...not that I'm complaining. There can never be enough zombie apocalypse/space opera/wizard AUs. Or implausible crossovers.

I like ghost fic too! It always* ends up really cool and heavily relying on the characters being written well.

*At least all of the ones I've read.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2012-10-28 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I agree -- especially since it's so much fun to write! My personal favorite of my own stories has a ghost as its most important character (as in, not the main, but rather the driving force? I hope that makes sense), and I loved writing him.

I don't understand how you or anyone else could see this as being acceptable. It's actually incredibly offensive, and I don't think one can claim "ignorance" of the issue at this point.

You really should try to be more sensitive and stop spreading these damaging tropes.

I'm with you, OP! I love ghost fic and have written some in a few different fandoms. I think part of the reason that people might avoid it, but flock to things like Zombie AUs (which I also love, btw), is because a lot of ghost!fic tends to be a bit on the bittersweet/depressing side and they don't enjoy writing that kind of thing. Especially since one of the characters is dead and may or may not have to move on at the end of the fic. At least with other kinds of fic, even if they're in horrible circumstances, there's a chance they might live at the end. Although there's nothing really saying that just because they're a ghost they'll be gone by the end of the fic, but yeah.

[personal profile] isa_lyxces 2012-10-29 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of people just don't want to deal with the implications of the afterlife. I mean, they either have to go the "they don't know anything" route, or have a good reason for the ghost to not tell anyone.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Because for their to be a ghost someone has to have died and a fair number of us aren't fond of character death.

And those that are often seem to like the actual death and the effect on the surviving people rather than what happens to the character after death.

Ghost-fic recs:

There are only two that I've read that have stayed with me, but they're both amazing.
