Gus is Walt without the moral conflict. Like Walt at least feel some degree of remorse if he does something heinous, whereas Gus is more cold, clinical and sociopathic.

Kind of baffled that people think he's the "better" person (although both are pretty horrible people).

DA

I don't know if I'd say it's "worse," but... I'd rather deal with someone who is sociopathic and completely without morals than someone who tries to justify what he does, while both of them do the same things.

Gus was trying to avenge his boyfriend's murder.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Gus did more than offing the cartel.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
But could he have offed them if he hadn't risen to a position of power?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Then how come he didn't stop making meth after he killed them?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Hector was still alive.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Gus could have easily had him killed at any point. He kept him alive so he could taunt him and only moved to actually kill him when he thought Hector was going to the police.

There's nothing to suggest that once he had his revenge he would have retired or given himself in.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Except making Hector suffer was his revenge; simply killing him would have been too quick.

I think avenging Max was Gus's main focus. We saw that he didn't really have a personal life, so unlike Walt he didn't need the money.

Gus is a man who had one Achilles Heel, as far as we know: His burning desire for vengeance against the people who killed Max, who was very important to him. We don’t tend to nail things down on Breaking Bad. It’s fun to be a little mysterious, and it’s nice to have the audience come up with backstories on their own. Having said that, I personally think Max was more than just a friend to Gus. I think they probably were lovers. And therefore it was understandably a very crushing, terrible loss for Gus, one that he would never forget. That one bit of emotion that he allowed himself ultimately proved to be his undoing.

That's not really a legitimate excuse for him to keep on distributing meth and ruining countless lives in the process.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but I think it makes him more sympathetic than Walt.

Sidebar: This is the first time I've seen something where Vince actually acknowledged the relationship instead of pulling the whole "you can think what you want" thing. I'm so delighted!

Yeah, sorry, anon, I don't buy for even a second that he would have stopped after Hector's death. Remember that: 1) Max died because they were trying to get into the meth business, 2) Gus was talking to Lydia about expanding the empire into the Czech Republic, and 3) before he started with meth he had some kind of undisclosed position with the Pinochet government (high up enough to be referred to as a "generalissimo," and enough to make Don Eladio scared to kill him).

I absolutely love Gus, but none of these things point to a good guy who was only out for revenge for his boyfriend.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I also find Gus sympathetic, but please. Don't water him down. He was aiming for a position of power in the drug world long before they killed his boyfriend.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
By that logic, Walt's just trying to support his family.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Except he could have taken the money but chose not to because of his pride.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
And Gus didn't have to build a huge meth empire and have innocent people killed.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Could he have killed the cartel like he did if he wasn't in that position of power?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. My. God. I am so sick of this argument. Gus and Walt are both terrible people who do terrible things with some comprehensible motives buried in there somewhere. I don't care which of them is worse, they're both awful, and anyone who does care isn't going to change their mind because of the ten thousandth retread of this discussion! Just leave it.

Possibly.

We won't know because he didn't try.
