Well, okay, I guess, but wouldn't you want to experience the canon yourself after a while? There IS a difference between researching something and experiencing it for yourself.

This is really true. I guess some people just process information differently, but I don't feel like I can get a handle on characters unless I see them in action, at least just a little bit. And there are a lot of little things you miss just from researching them.

I agree with you -- not having seen the original source material, I'm only ever going to be picking and choosing what I like best about other people's interpretations of the characters. However, as far as I can tell that's how most people end up operating whether they know the original material or not.

I definitely think there are people who've watched everything who still rely pretty heavily on fanon tropes and building on other people's interpretations, for sure. That's how a lot of fanon starts in the first place. And fanon itself isn't inherently bad - it's just when people start believing it's actual canon that it gets a little side-eye worthy, but it doesn't sound like that's what you've been doing. And hey, if you're enjoying yourself, that's what really matters.
