Not OP

Length and breadth is a big issue. A newbie to DC or Marvel's huge universes, or to a manga with 500+ chapters like One Piece, I seriously would not blame them very much if they have no time

Some shows are either incredibly hard to find in watchable quality or/and too long winded for the time I'd want to dedicate watching them, so I can understand a little why someone would want to have fun with some characters they liked on sight.

That being said, I'm not sure what's with this OP's waspish tone. Wasn't there a better way to write it down, I wonder? >>

Well, I only saw an hour of Sherlock because some friends, both real-life and fandom, went on incessantly about it. But I realized I loved the people in fandom, and I loved their character interpretations, so if it weren't for them, I wouldn't have started watching Sherlock. And I still haven't seen any Marvel movies outside of youtube clips, but I only sought those out because the fandom was so nice. Nearly everything I'm a fan of, I became a fan because I loved the fandom first. I'm not the OP, and this is just my story, but it's a pretty good reason, I think.

You can like something's plot, while disliking how they chose to present it. The acting, the visuals chosen, how they decide to pace things out, etc.

Perhaps OP just likes reading about it more?
Maybe that's just a better format for them.

But why would you participate in a fandom where you don't know the source material? I mean, I guess I understand if its something really hard to archive-binge on, like a really long-running comic book/webcomic/manga (or maybe something like old-school Doctor Who), but other than that...just why? Why'd you be interested in the fandom in the first place?

On the one hand, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. How does one realistically become a fan of something that one has never heard, watched, or read?

On the other hand, I have fannish feelings for fandom itself, which is likely akin to your practice.

Don't have to catch you. But your not a real fan and you know it, no matter how much you lie to yourself. Try actually liking something you claim to like, it's more rewarding then your bizzare spy game.

I don't really care if someone wants to write fic for a canon they haven't even seen the source material for, but why anyone would do it puzzles me.

I'll sometimes see something about a canon and think, ooh, that looks interesting, but then I'll go watch/read/play at least some of it, before making fanworks. Even if I was confident that I knew enough about the characters, I'd like to have actual experience with the thing I claim to be a fan of.

There's a girl in Canada who edits my stories in return for my editing her My Little Pony fics. I love her work, and through her, I've discovered many similarly great authors on FIMfiction. But every time I try to watch the show, I can't get past the theme song. (For what it's worth, I intend to watch it eventually--certainly before I ever try writing fic for it.)

I don't know, personally I think that the fact that the ATG characterisation is so prevalent that people who don't even know the source material can get by in a fandom is depressing.

It's not that I think there's anything objectively wrong with liking ATG, but it's annoying for those of us who really do care about canon characterisation.

[personal profile] visp 2012-10-28 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if you're writing fic, be prepared for some annoyed fans, but if you like reading fic for things you haven't seen, well, I suppose there's no wrong way to enjoy reading a fic.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
My only problem with people who don't watch any source material is that most of them aren't like the OP and don't bother to research, which leads to a lot of misinformation being spread around. I agree, though, that there are people who have watched source material who rely just heavily on fanon tropes (and they're generally the ones who start spreading said tropes/characterization around in the first place, so that's how people who only engage with fanworks get those ideas in the first place). Mostly, I'm a live and let live person. I don't think I could be into a fandom for a show I'd never watched, but I don't see the issue with other people enjoying things that way. So long as they don't try to convince me of things that have never, ever happened in the show are canon, that is. Like one person I met in TW fandom who hadn't watched the show and tried to argue with me that Stiles' dad being an alcoholic was canon because they'd seen a gif set of him drinking from season one on Tumblr and... no. That is a case of definitely running off of fanon and not checking your facts. Then again, I've had people who've actually seen shows (and not just TW) make statements like that that are just as not-based in canon, so...

I mean, I get this, but I'm fairly bitter on this topic for various reasons.
For instance, once I made little keychains featuring the characters of a series and gave them out at a meet. One person dressed as 'popular yaoibait' character from late in the show said 'just give me whichever' and and I thought they must then like all the characters, right? Nope, because when I handed them one of the first characters ever introduced (saying "here, have (her name") they said "no idea who that is, but whatever."
I was too shocked to take it back and try to give it to someone who'd appreciate it, but I wish I had.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never researched a whole show, but I do it sometimes for things like seasons, episodes, etc., I haven't watched. It's pretty boring, and even when I go to learn fanon, I feel a little empty, like I don't have a proper grasp on things, no matter how much I try (then again, I tire easily, so maybe I'm not trying that hard). I always prefer to get my own headcanon for things, because sometimes the popular fanon interpretation is just...wrong to me. But hey, to each their own.

I've never written for something I've never seen/played/read, but I constantly read fic for shows and movies and comics I've only ever wiki articles about. People always look at me like that's really strange, but idc. Certain plot points escape me for the first few fics but eventually you figure that shit out and good writing is good writing. :/

There are a couple authors in one of my fandoms that tag their fic on AO3 with cutesy tags about how they have never seen an episode and are still writing and isn't that hilarious. I tend to think it's not funny and don't read their fic.

However, OP if you did your research and don't tell me I will probably read your fic none the wiser.

Personally, I'll sometimes read fic on an archive for fandoms I have no familiarity with. That's what happens when I follow tags on AO3. When I do that for the most part I am reading it the same way I would read original fiction since I don't really know the characters and a lot of the fic are AUs anyway.

When it comes to writing though, I think it's strange to not have seen or read ANY of the source material. I get that some source materials are too vast or difficult to obtain to see/read them all and I have written one Marvel 616 one-shot having only read some of the comics and spending a lot longer on the wikis. So I get that. But personally, when it comes to TV shows if possible I try to watch things at least twice before I write. *shrug* But that is how my obsessions tend to go and other people can do whatever they want.
