I guess I just don't understand WHY you would want to though...

Not OP

Length and breadth is a big issue. A newbie to DC or Marvel's huge universes, or to a manga with 500+ chapters like One Piece, I seriously would not blame them very much if they have no time

or the huge long asstangle that is homestuck

Actually Homestuck is one of the worst examples because it tends to be fairly easy to catch the ones that don't do the reading there.

comics I can understand, but not TV shows. Unless you're talking about Dr Who I guess... but I get the feeling from the secret that OP has never seen an episode of the show they're in the fandom for, which seems strange to me.

The OP is specifically talking about TV shows, though. Which, I mean, you certainly don't have to watch it all, but I guess I just don't understand what would motivate a person to be fannish about a show they haven't even seen at least a couple of episodes for.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The poster I responded to didn't get "why anybody would want to" and the reasons for both shows and something like the extended Marvel multiverse are the same.

Replace the comment with any show that has 6/7+ seasons and branch-off series, then. SPN. Buffy/Angel. Star Trek and on. That is a lot of time

I agree. Not that there's anything wrong with wanting to be in a fandom if it fascinates you, whether you've seen or experienced the source material or not, but I don't personally understand it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
If you know a show has things in it that'll piss you off, not watching it means not having to watch those.

There are those television shows with 8 or 9 seasons, though, so length is still a factor to consider. Also, I know I've personally gotten into fandoms for show I didn't watch because of favorite fanfic authors. There I'd be, reading fic for a fandom I was in and loving it, then I'd run across a crossover between beloved fandom/other fandom, and voila! Interest in other fandom with a dauntingly-extensive canon.

It's more common than it should be with me, I think. :/

Some people are really bad with audiovisual content - there are people in fandom who are faceblind, or have audio comprehension or visual processing issues, or for a variety of reasons are just not very good at absorbing story via TV/Movies. If watching a TV show is a combination of confusion, mortification, and pain, but all your friends are talking about how amazing these characters are, getting into it through fic is a great option to have.

(I personally find it pretty pointless to watch a live action show until I've read at least a few longish fics because, unless everybody has a different hair color, I can't keep the characters straight until I've gotten to know them via text.)

Yeah, but wouldn't you at least want to read/watch part of it? Even just a little bit? I mean, if you're not interested at all, why read the fanfiction? Idgi.

Some shows are either incredibly hard to find in watchable quality or/and too long winded for the time I'd want to dedicate watching them, so I can understand a little why someone would want to have fun with some characters they liked on sight.

That being said, I'm not sure what's with this OP's waspish tone. Wasn't there a better way to write it down, I wonder? >>

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Find the reply saying "you're not a real fan and you know it". That's why it's waspish.

It took longer than I was expecting for someone to say it.

A non-preemptively defensive way to write it down would be, maybe, "I'm participating in a fandom for a TV show I do not watch and have no intention of watching, and I feel a little guilty -- but not very. Nine times out of ten I'd rather read something than watch it, and horror is not my thing, but I like to play with the mythology and the characters. I know the concrete aspects of the canon from research, and the wobbly ones like characterization no one can agree on anyway. I know there are people who hate what I'm doing. I'm doing it anyway."

"you're not a real fan and you know it"

Well, uh, OP isn't. You can't really be a fan of something you've never seen.

Well, I only saw an hour of Sherlock because some friends, both real-life and fandom, went on incessantly about it. But I realized I loved the people in fandom, and I loved their character interpretations, so if it weren't for them, I wouldn't have started watching Sherlock. And I still haven't seen any Marvel movies outside of youtube clips, but I only sought those out because the fandom was so nice. Nearly everything I'm a fan of, I became a fan because I loved the fandom first. I'm not the OP, and this is just my story, but it's a pretty good reason, I think.
deadtree: (Default)

[personal profile] deadtree 2012-10-28 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I can definitely understand that-- I encountered the fandoms for some shows I enjoy now long before I started watching the shows, too-- but I didn't ever go out of my way to be a part of the fandom (especially not to the extent of learning all the history and lore of the series) before I actually watched the show.

I'm wondering if this is because I'm one of those people who really really hates spoilers, though-- not all people really care whether they get spoiled for something.
elephantinegrace: (Default)

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2012-10-28 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think anyone sets out to consciously learn the history and lore; they pick it up from other people in the fandom.

And as far as spoilers go, I'm the completely opposite; if I don't know how something goes, I won't watch it. I don't care if you tell me the plot. In fact, I want you to tell me the plot. That way, I'll know if the show/book/movie will interest me at all, and I'll see how the story is told.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
... not everyone can access the shows easily (or at all). :/

You can like something's plot, while disliking how they chose to present it. The acting, the visuals chosen, how they decide to pace things out, etc.

Perhaps OP just likes reading about it more?
Maybe that's just a better format for them.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Very good guess! I'd rather read than watch.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I can't get into a particular canon but still find the fandom (or at least significant parts of it) incredibly compelling. I guess you could say I'm not so much in the fandom as the fandom's fandom..?

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-10-28 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
There are some fandoms I really like but hate the source material for.

/I refuse to admit which ones.
