Not OP

Length and breadth is a big issue. A newbie to DC or Marvel's huge universes, or to a manga with 500+ chapters like One Piece, I seriously would not blame them very much if they have no time

or the huge long asstangle that is homestuck

Actually Homestuck is one of the worst examples because it tends to be fairly easy to catch the ones that don't do the reading there.

comics I can understand, but not TV shows. Unless you're talking about Dr Who I guess... but I get the feeling from the secret that OP has never seen an episode of the show they're in the fandom for, which seems strange to me.

The OP is specifically talking about TV shows, though. Which, I mean, you certainly don't have to watch it all, but I guess I just don't understand what would motivate a person to be fannish about a show they haven't even seen at least a couple of episodes for.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The poster I responded to didn't get "why anybody would want to" and the reasons for both shows and something like the extended Marvel multiverse are the same.

Replace the comment with any show that has 6/7+ seasons and branch-off series, then. SPN. Buffy/Angel. Star Trek and on. That is a lot of time

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's definitely a lot of time, and it's understandable if someone who's come in late either hasn't or doesn't want to consume the entirety of extent canon.

But if someone hasn't seen any episodes at all, ever -- not even one -- then that makes absolutely no sense. How do they know they even like the show?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
They might not.

I've read fanfics I love for series I *hate* before. (Twilight - I'm looking at you.)

Sometimes you really like the premise, but hate the execution. If enough people feel the same way there can be a lot of "fix it" fics which will have the premise but "do it better".

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
But how can one hate the execution if one has never experienced it? That's the disconnect, here. Maybe this is just me, but I'm not going to declare that I dislike something if I've never read, watched, or heard even a part of it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
If you have specific tastes you can often get a good idea if you're going to like something or not.

I mean, surprises always happen, but you can get really, really good a that particular prediction.

I agree. Not that there's anything wrong with wanting to be in a fandom if it fascinates you, whether you've seen or experienced the source material or not, but I don't personally understand it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
If you know a show has things in it that'll piss you off, not watching it means not having to watch those.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can understand that. There's shows that I've quit watching because they're so frustrating, but I still read fic for them. And I was really into Torchwood fic for a while there, but I couldn't stand the show itself.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
There are those television shows with 8 or 9 seasons, though, so length is still a factor to consider. Also, I know I've personally gotten into fandoms for show I didn't watch because of favorite fanfic authors. There I'd be, reading fic for a fandom I was in and loving it, then I'd run across a crossover between beloved fandom/other fandom, and voila! Interest in other fandom with a dauntingly-extensive canon.

It's more common than it should be with me, I think. :/

Huh, you know, I guess I've done that sort of thing myself! I got into both Ace Attorney and Metal Gear Solid through fanfic. IMO, reading fanfic for a series you don't know isn't all that strange, because there can be tropes and such you like in the story that you'd appreciate even without knowing the canon. I think what confused was that, since the OP said 'we'll never catch them', I assumed they were writing fanfic for the series they'd never seen. Which, I would at least watch a couple episodes centered around the characters I was writing if I were going to do that- I don't think I trust my skills enough to be able to write the characters without at least that much.

If the OP is enjoying themselves, though, I say go for it! I think I just prefer to do fandom differently is all.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Some people are really bad with audiovisual content - there are people in fandom who are faceblind, or have audio comprehension or visual processing issues, or for a variety of reasons are just not very good at absorbing story via TV/Movies. If watching a TV show is a combination of confusion, mortification, and pain, but all your friends are talking about how amazing these characters are, getting into it through fic is a great option to have.

(I personally find it pretty pointless to watch a live action show until I've read at least a few longish fics because, unless everybody has a different hair color, I can't keep the characters straight until I've gotten to know them via text.)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-30 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this is very similar to my experience. Sometimes I'll get sucked into a fandom via fic and fanart, and don't get around to watching the canon for months. When I finally DO manage to sit through a whole episode/movie, I'll be too overloaded to actually absorb very much. But it's okay because I'm basically just watching it to put faces to names, really.

Yeah, but wouldn't you at least want to read/watch part of it? Even just a little bit? I mean, if you're not interested at all, why read the fanfiction? Idgi.
