Some people are really bad with audiovisual content - there are people in fandom who are faceblind, or have audio comprehension or visual processing issues, or for a variety of reasons are just not very good at absorbing story via TV/Movies. If watching a TV show is a combination of confusion, mortification, and pain, but all your friends are talking about how amazing these characters are, getting into it through fic is a great option to have.

(I personally find it pretty pointless to watch a live action show until I've read at least a few longish fics because, unless everybody has a different hair color, I can't keep the characters straight until I've gotten to know them via text.)

Yes, this is very similar to my experience. Sometimes I'll get sucked into a fandom via fic and fanart, and don't get around to watching the canon for months. When I finally DO manage to sit through a whole episode/movie, I'll be too overloaded to actually absorb very much. But it's okay because I'm basically just watching it to put faces to names, really.
