Petyr is the only of those characters I know (and I'm utterly in love with). Care to explain the trend? Does it have to do with the creepy ebebophile factor?

The homestuck one has been described by the creator as "the worst character in homestuck ever" and he's not really an ebebophile since they were the same age, but his establishing character moment was when he hit on a character who was a lot weaker than him when it was clear the other character didn't want it.

idk about the other one, I didn't finish watching Legend of Korra.

Hit on is putting it kindly. He literally molested a mentally disabled kid.

Yeah I was kind of struggling with how to phrase it but...yeah.

Oh

haha, when I see people downplay this scene it makes me so angry, it's so obvious what Hussie was going for. :1

Uggh, I'm sorry, I feel kind of awful about the way I described it.

Oh, no no, I didn't mean you! Sorry, I meant people who don't even think Cronus did anything that bad.

What, exactly, is the appeal of Homestuck? I would ask my friends who seem to be into it, but quite frankly they terrifying me.

General hilarity is the reason I like it. Also an insanely long and involved plot for those who enjoy spending weeks at a time catching up to the current pages.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
They terrify you? You kind of sound like a shitty friend. And I'm not even a Homestuck fan.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
When they start talking about homestuck on FB they all start using hardcore meme-speak and all caps, and are really mean about people who don't like it.

Thus, I'm sort of afraid to ask them about it, for fear of being friend-shunned if I end up not liking it.

They're lovely people for the most part, but they're hardcore in the fandom hivemind about Homestuck, it seems like from the outside, and that can be intimidating.

I'll give you the standard fandom suggestion of "try reading it, if it hasn't caught your interest at all by the time you get to Wayward Vagabond, its probably not your kind of story.

I'd recommend going a lot farther than the introduction of WV. I didn't really get into it at all until Act IV but now it's like, my favorite thing

Okay here we go.

Homestuck is long. Long and wonderful. It uses it's medium well with flashes and musical pages and gifs and links. It has soundtracks. Not a soundtrack. SOUNDTRACKS. THERE ARE CONCEPT ALBUMS. Over 20 albums overall and counting. (look at the music link on it's front page). Here's an old reliable for the rest:

... alright, I've been hemming and hawwing over checking it out because it sounds like such a time investment and I really don't have a whole lot of that as of late -- but "Jumanji only with the Sims and Spore"? TOTALLY THERE.

.... how much of my life am I going to lose here now? XD

The thing is, it takes a lot of time to catch up, kind of like a TV show that's been out for a few seasons - but once you're caught up the time required to actually *keep* up with canon is really minimal. And the fandom is large and wonderful with a wide variety of fanworks to enjoy, but of course you can choose how much time to put into that. ^^

The appeal of Homestuck...

Extremely clever writing, engaging plot, awesome characters (Cronus, the dead purpley guy above, is a MAJOR exception, he's a big douche, but he was written that way on purpose I think), incredible music, a combination of being utterly serious and utterly silly at the same time, time shenanigans, shipping, wonderful fanworks, and an overall great multi-media story that is basically made out of the Internet.

It takes a while to get into the story, but is well worth it.

Hussies description of Cronus in the easter egg was that he was literally "the worst homestuck character."

He's everything you hated in Eridan distilled and in a greaser package. Also a fucking TRANSETHNIC OTHERKIN

Easter Egg????????

And I thought Horuss was the "otherkin"

Tarrlock (from Korra) is a manipulative liar with an inferiority complex that stems from never being able to make his dad happy/not being able to be as good as his big brother. He manipulates both the City council and Korra multiple times easily by playing off their insecurities.
