I feel like I'm out of the loop, but then I only just started watching House recently. Why do people hate Cameron?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
She is really self righteous and gets up on a moral high horse when actually a lot of the time either she is really wrong or there is so much room for disagreement with her that her insistance is really obnoxious. She had a crush on her boss and dealt with that in really inappropriate ways. But mostly her arrogance.

Criticizing someone on House for arrogance? Do you dislike all the other arrogant people on House?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, actually. But House is not nearly as morally self righteous and when he is he is generally not wrong. Wilson is almost as bad as Cameron, as well as a raging hypocrite, and I dislike Wilson as well.

Fair enough.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I like her, I don't get it.

I find her approach to morality creepy as fuck. The fact that she seems to genuinely believe her actions come from a ~kind~ and more ~ethically informed~ place and are therefore right is scary and ew. (Although to be fair, it isn't that hard to be more ethically informed than House. It's the way she approaches it that squicks me out.)

Because she's a generally horrible person who always claims to have the moral high ground, and unfortunately the show itself often agreed. It was the MOST annoying thing about the show, to me.

I think the reason that people love House but hate Cameron even though they're both very arrogant characters is WHAT they're arrogant about. It's a difference between intellectual superiority and moral superiority. I find both repugnant when it comes to people in real life, but in fiction some people can tolerate or even enjoy one while disliking the other.

For example, I find intellectual superiority in fiction entertaining to watch / read. However, moral superiority in a character irritates me.

So yeah, I think that's the reason? Or at least part of it.

emotional manipulation disguised as moral superiority isn't just irritating, it can get really creepy.

Yes, agreed. I haven't watched the series in an extremely long time, but I remember actively hating her character because some of the stunts she pulled in the name of having "good morals".

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. House is not a good person, but he is entertaining. Cameron's moral superiority complex was both worse, IMHO, and not at all entertaining. And as someone else said, it was also creepy. And the fact that the show so often agreed with her even when she was so very wrong.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, the show, while highlighting House's genuis does do a good job of pointing out that he is far from ideal. The fact that they treat Cameron who is equally as horrible in a completely different as some kind of foil to all of House's flaws is really skeevy and weird.

Agreed. Back when I was hugely into the series every time I mentioned that I loved the character House I always felt the need to qualify it with the fact that I knew he wasn't a good person and that I found him entertaining DESPITE that fact. He didn't try to hide it, and neither did the show. That was part of the entertainment - we weren't expected to see him as a good person.

OTOH Cameron seems to perceive herself as a good person, the SHOW tries to convince us that she is a good person, and the truth is no, actually, she's NOT a good person.
