I'm the same way. Want to like Emma but hated her character in How I Met Your Mother.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't see House though, so only trying to get over her as Zoey.

It took me a while to overlook her House character too. There are moments where suddenly I want to throw something at my television and bean "Cameron" on her head and then I remember that it's Emma and she's okay. LOL

Guess I'm just lucky because I've never looked at Emma and thought "Cameron".

Sorry, OP. That sucks.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Same. And I usually have horrible character/actor issues, so I'm not sure why.

Unless it's because I haven't devoted much headspace to House in its recent years, so 'Cameron' is still a brunette in my head, and the blonde is an easy visual cue that it's not her.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought of her as Cameron for a while too, you just have to watch more Once and it eventually fades. At least it did for me.

Emma is not really a spectacular character though so don't feel bad if you don't end up liking her. I mean I don't hate her but she can be annoying sometimes and for me she is not the reason I watch the series.

I liked Emma in the beginning, but I feel like, compared to everyone else, she's really ineffectual. She tries to threaten Gold when he pisses her off, but he's just going to keep doing it because he's not afraid of her, and I'm not either. I just don't believe she can follow through.
Also, it doesn't help that Jennifer Morrison's emotions never come through for me. No matter what show she's in, she always seems very flat IMO.

I love Emma! I keep seeing her as Kirk 2009's mum. Winona Kirk is pretty awesome, so it's a good association.

I'm not a huge Emma fan either, but she's definitely better than Cameron. I mean, she's a lot more take-charge, right? I've had that experience, though. I had unreasonable hatred for Vanessa Marano for ages because I so loathed her character on Gilmore Girls. Oddly, after she died horribly on Dexter, I felt free to like her on Switched at Birth. It was cathartic.

Now and then this happens to me too. I can't watch Mark Harmon in anything because of how much I hated his character on St. Elsewhere. He was supposed to be pretty insufferable but I just loathed him beyond reason. (I didn't even see Mark Harmon play Ted Bundy, you'd think that would be the problem, but no.)

I kind of liked Cameron myself. But I get why people don't.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Too bad. Cameron was awesome and so is Emma.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Setting up camp with the above anon. Haters gonna hate and all that jazz.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
For me it's less about Cameron and more that I really just am not a fan of Jennifer Morrison's acting. It's true that I loathed Cameron, but I don't actually have an issue with Emma the character - it's just that I don't feel like Jennifer Morrison is believably pulling off the whole badass routine.

I actually started watching OUaT because of Jennifer Morrison, because I wanted to see how she'd do with a role that was so different from Cameron (and, I admit, because I'd been influenced by one too many badass Winona Kirk fics). But I really feel like she's the weak link in the show, acting wise. Which is a problem when you're playing the central character of the show.

Obviously, YMMV.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that she's a weak actress, but I wouldn't call her the only weak link in the show.

Regina's actress is also terrible, as is Belle's. Some would also claim Henry but I tend to give him a pass because he's a kid.

I don't completely blame them because it is one of those shows where the writing is cheesy so the actor has to be really able to hold their own to pull it off, but a lot of the actors in the show do a better job then those 3 so for me their acting stands out the most.

I feel like I'm out of the loop, but then I only just started watching House recently. Why do people hate Cameron?

I separate shit like a meat slicer. Ain't no Cameron when it ain't Cameron. Ain't no Zoey neither, less it's Zoey.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Kinda OT but those promo pics with a sword-wielding female protagonist makes the show seems so interesting! Then I remember the 2564712 season one episodes about Regina and Emma fighting over how to raise Henry and Mr. Gold being every goddamn fairytale character and I get disappointed.

I've never seen the actress in any other shows but I disliked Emma too.

Well, I liked her from day one because I'm fond of the actress and never got the hate she got in House.

So glad I am not alone in this. I feel bad about it, but I can't help it!

Hmm, there's a lot of reasonable dislike for a character who happens to be female in this thread. I wonder if fandom-hates-women will snap it up.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
don't you mean separating characters from each other though? I mean, it's hard to say what JMo is like but I'm pretty sure her characters in House and OUAT aren't it.

anyway, I had the experience where I couldn't stand her character in House but am SO GLAD to see her shine in OUAT.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of hate for Jennifer Morrison's characters bleeds over into Once Upon a Time, which is a shame because I really don't think she's that bad. More than once, she's made me laugh out loud with her expressions when someone says something she thinks is bull, and I like my female characters ballsy and tough sometimes. She's not a woman lead character; she's a lead character who just happens to be a woman also.

I think part of the problem is that while she isn't as awesome as she could be, that's not her fault. It's the way Emma is written and directed. She's the hero. I mean, look at Prince Charming. He's kind of a bland character. His defining attribute is that he's kind of a doofus as Charming and a really, really big doofus as David. A relatively likeable doofus, but nonetheless. He's just the hero.

There's a reason people gravitate towards the villains in this fandom. Villains have motivations and inner struggles on this show outside of "I am the hero and I am going to do this thing heroically!" Which is the pit that Emmma has largely slipped into, even if it is really all for Henry.

She needs a strong motivation outside of Henry. I'm not saying she should lose the Henry motivation; her love for her son is a driving force of this show and should remain that way. But a character can have multiple motivations.

I just started watching this show like two days ago. Im now on episode 8.
