For me it's less about Cameron and more that I really just am not a fan of Jennifer Morrison's acting. It's true that I loathed Cameron, but I don't actually have an issue with Emma the character - it's just that I don't feel like Jennifer Morrison is believably pulling off the whole badass routine.

I actually started watching OUaT because of Jennifer Morrison, because I wanted to see how she'd do with a role that was so different from Cameron (and, I admit, because I'd been influenced by one too many badass Winona Kirk fics). But I really feel like she's the weak link in the show, acting wise. Which is a problem when you're playing the central character of the show.

Obviously, YMMV.

I agree that she's a weak actress, but I wouldn't call her the only weak link in the show.

Regina's actress is also terrible, as is Belle's. Some would also claim Henry but I tend to give him a pass because he's a kid.

I don't completely blame them because it is one of those shows where the writing is cheesy so the actor has to be really able to hold their own to pull it off, but a lot of the actors in the show do a better job then those 3 so for me their acting stands out the most.

I don't know. I don't think Lana Parrilla is all that bad. I find her more convincing than Jennifer Morrison anyway. She has to do a lot of scenery chewing as the Evil Queen, but I figure that's more the role than the actress, and when she's not playing the Evil Queen I think she's been pretty good. I've actually been impressed at how well she's done in making a distinction between young Regina and our current Regina.

Emilie de Ravin is another story. And I don't get it, because I've seen her in other things and she's been fine, but wow, some of her scenes as Belle have made me cringe.

I guess agree to disagree because I don't think Lana does a great job, she doesn't all out annoy me but I usually love villains like her and I find myself not always caring about her scenes because her acting is just far too hammed up for my taste. I guess I could blame it on the nature of the character but I don't find her acting strong as young Regina either.

I agree about Emilie though, I've liked her in other things myself but she just does not connect with Belle at all.

These are the kinds of discussions which lead me to conclude no one on the internet can judge acting any better than I can and you're all just making crap up based on your own preferences for characters and/or individual actors.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
So no one can ever state their opinions about someone's acting, is that what you're saying? Because I honestly don't see how having an opinion is "making up crap."

Acting is an art form, and like any art it is largely subjective and people are going to disagree. Most people can tell what might be oscar worthy versus what might be razzie worthy, but everything in between is up for debate.

This doesn't mean people are making crap up, it just means we all have different levels of what we like and can tolerate in acting talent. There are also some times when people know the acting is bad, but combined with the writing and the character it doesn't bother them as much as it might bother another person.

Even in Once you can still get most people to agree that Robert Carlyle is an excellent actor. Even if they don't like Rumpel or the writing surrounding the character, on an objective level Carlyle is in the very least "good". So I really don't think all the discussion is people making crap up.
