JSTOR saved my ass many times when I was getting my degree in history, it's the best thing ever for articles and documents.

Wikipedia is lousy for writing papers as a primary source, but it is a good place to get primary sources elsewhere.

Lacus Curtius is absofuckinglutely fantastic for the major ancient Roman & Greek sources, esp. Plutarch. Seriously, you've no idea how much trouble it's saved me. It doesn't have everything, but it's got a great selection. Of course, this is if you don't mind the Loeb translations, but it sure beats traipsing to the library.

Ditto with Perseus: http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/

Seconding the hell out of JSTOR.

I'm not great with modern sources, but things like your country's war memorial (online) might be helpful, depending on which period you wanted to study.

Dammit, totally didn't see the "for research" bit. My bad.
