No, that's about how most people feel about Young Avengers--love the characters, baffled by the plot. You should have been around when the fandom was following Children's Crusade.

I think that's how a lot of people feel about Marvel and DC in general. Both have a lot of awesome characters and a lot of weird, convoluted, badly written stories.

Oh god, don't mention Children's Crusade. My head still hurts from that bullshit.

This, so much. And it only gets worse when they reference the other plots currently going on in their shared universe, which make just as little sense.

Hang on a second... a shared universe is a BAD thing? Is that what you're saying? Obviously YMMV but I love the fact that the 616 is a shared universe and characters can pop up in other books. I love that there's a pretty decent chance that say... the Human Torch will pop up in Amazing Spider-Man. I love that across this world, characters all over the place have a shared history and have built major relationships. It feels a lot more real to me than saying "LOLTHESE 6 PEOPLE ARE IT YOU'LL NEVER SEE ANOTHER RECOGNIZABLE SOUL EVER!"

I can't speak for the anon above, but I think a shared universe is a good thing, but it's also something that can be abused just to boost sales. I love seeing references to other plotlines and having other characters appear, but only when it's done well. And, let's face it, sometimes the writers do just like to shove other characters from the universe in because they can, or because they think giving x character a cameo will bring in their fans and boost sales, without it making much sense with the plot and generally seeming pretty contrived. There are some great examples of how to incorporate other characters and the broader universe into a title the right way, but there are a lot of examples of how not to do it, too.

I'm fairly sure the above anon was only talking about Children's Crusade, too, and that book was a mess from beginning to end, to be quite honest, and very much an example of how not to bring the broader universe in. Which is sad, because I think there was a lot of potential to bring more of the outside universe into the YA title with that one, but the execution was horrendous. A lot of the cameos honestly felt pretty gratuitous, and for someone who wasn't familiar with House of M and recent events in the current universe, things would have been pretty hard to follow. Some people are only interested in reading certain titles, and it's got to be pretty annoying when you've got to stop reading and google stuff every other page because the writers do a poor job explaining outside events. That's really not the way to get people who are just readers of one title interested enough in the broader universe to start branching out and reading other things.

I haven't even READ Children's Crusade because I could smell the impending doom (no pun intended), and then I felt so vindicated when my friends were twitching in agony! D: After Runaways, I always expect the worst to happen with anything with teens in it for both companies.

Yeah. Just the teens... oh. Wait.
