This is a secret? Everyone I know who loves this show either hated or was indifferent to most of season 2 for that reason.

Unless it's Bronies, I guess. They can't see irony or the like at all.

No argument from me.

I quit watching in S2 because of this. It just didn't interest me anymore. I wanted the show about the magic of friendship, not the show about the magic of bronies.

I'm just glad Season 2 stayed away from shit the episodes "Over a Barrel" and "Feeling Pinkie Keen" were made of. Interestingly, both were written by the same guy.

Ok, the "Derpy fiasco" was a really dumb move. Naming the pony after internet slang and having it talk and act like the dumbest person ever was too much and exploded into the biggest wank the entire MLP fandom has ever seen.
But this episode aside I really liked Season 2.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
If that episode didn't decide to try to canonize a stupid internet meme spouted by 20-year-olds in a show intended for 5-year-olds, I would've loved it, because the point of it ("it's okay to not be the best all the time, and expecting somebody to be the best all the time puts a shit-ton of pressure on them") hit close to home and was something I really needed to hear when I was a kid. But... ugh, that just kinda ruined it for me. MLP isn't about internet culture and it isn't trying to be hip and edgy for the teens and preteens. I get enough of stupid internet memes on the internet, around my college campus, and as wink-wink-nudge-nudge in-jokes in my video games, and now I can't even get away from them in children's TV shows...

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
S2 had a couple episodes I enjoyed here and there, but for the most part, yes this so much.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
My 5 year old loved the Royal Wedding but could care less about the Cutie Mark Crusaders. She still insists I buy her an ass-load of ponies, though, so I'm guessing it's still hitting the intended little girl market.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I would be happy if they never made another CMC episode. I'm so tired of them.

I'm a little weirded out by the fact that Sweetie-belle is rarity's "little sister" but she basically raises her alone as if she were her mother. I know their parents were shown once...but that was once.

Are Cutie Mark Crusaders like, in-canon Social Justice Warriors?

That's all I'm getting.

I loved it, but the shout outs to the internet fandom were cringe inducing. Just no. It feels out of place, is out of place, just no. Having stuff in there for adults (like the Dude cameo in the background of one ep) is fine, but letting fandom influence the show will lead to nothing good.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Stuff like the Big Lebowski cameos and the I Love Lucy shout-out I think were less for the fandom and more for the parents watching with their kids- those kind of adult shout-outs I'm okay with, because a lot of kids' shows and movies do that, and they're either in the background and attention isn't drawn to them (like the Dude), or they're integrated seamlessly in a way that isn't an in-joke and everybody can get it whether they understand the reference or not (I Love Lucy but with cherries). But all the fandom shout-outs were in-joke-y and felt like they had a giant red arrow over them going "HELLO BRONIES THIS IS FOR YOU DO YOU SEE IT LOOK HEY LOOK RIGHT HERE LOOK AT THIS."

I liked season 2 but then again I never really ventured into the MLP fandom so maybe I just didn't realize the extent that it was pandering to fandom...

What killed it for me is how Pinkie Pie is an absolute horrible pony in season 2.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
ugh, Pinkie Pie was always my least favorite

At some point, I'll watch the rest of S2, so I can form a proper opinion. The show really did seem to lose a lot of its charm though.

Season 2 was a huge load of horse crap (pun completely intended), imho.

It started out strong with the Discord episodes -which I loved-, but after that, practically everything about this season was just flat-out uncomfortable to watch. The "Derpy Hooves" fiasco was where I jumped ship from the fandom, and after several duds in a row episode-wise, I'm not coming back for Season 3. =(

Here's hoping for better in S3!

My prediction is that the massive fandom will start dying off in S3. Not from lack of quality, but lack of interest... then again, there are multiple cons set up. CONS. Based on bronies. Not My Little Pony cons, brony cons. It's getting way out of hand.

I liked Season 1 better myself, but I think the difference could also be attributed to the change in staff. They were switching out producers or something, so I can imagine that certain ideas that wouldn't make the best episodes might have gone through anyway in those circumstances.

The bronies probably had something to do with it, but shows tend to get worse in transitional periods anyway.

Loved the first season (save a few shows), disliked the second season (save a few shows). Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion! :)

Ugh, God yes. Too much Pinkie Pie, and I KNOW it was aimed at the bronies...

Only episodes that I fully watched from Season 2 were:

- the Halloween / Luna one, which I liked, because I like pretty much any chance at getting an appearance out of Luna, especially a speaking one. I also liked what they did with her personality.

- the Discord ones, which I thought were good.

- the Cadence / Chrysalis ones, which I thought were good, even if the plot resolution was kind of stupid.

Can't comment on the other ones. Haven't seen the other ones. But it looks like I'm not missing out on much.
