I don't know how this movie got made. The setup of the psychological damage that those sisters sustained after the death of their parents is so intensely disturbing.

As opposed to any other Disney movie? Off the top of my head, the Rescuers was pretty fucked up, too, and that was decades before Lilo and Stitch came out.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I see your Rescuers and raise you The Fox and the Hound.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Nooooo, why did you bring up that movie?

BRB, going to cry buckets.

I never got why they couldn't be friends in the end. It's just, goddamn it, Disney, what kind of message is that?! It's like the secret about Lion King 2 in the last post: Disney is not fluffy sweetness and childhood innocence and never has been.

Uh, they were friends in the end.

Now, the book.. they were never friends...

How about The Lion King? The kid actually WATCHED HIS DAD DIE. And SO DID WE.

AND spent years thinking it was all his fault.

Now I'm trying to remember The Rescuers. I saw it when I was a kid (from the back of a dinosaur, blah blah blah) and I scared really easily but I don't remember being scared of it. Then again, I was around ten already so not a little kid.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
I think they mentioned The Rescuers because the MC is an orphan girl who gets abducted and abused, not because it's scary.

I'm seriously wondering if Lilo & Stitch is the only Disney movie you've ever seen right now.

I found Dumbo worse. Mom behind the bars, rocking Dumbo will never fail to tear out my heart and stomp on it.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-11-03 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
No. That never happened and I didn't just read this comment.

Rest your head close to my heart, never we'll part, baby of mine.

That song, man. That...that song...

The two most heart-breaking Disney scenes are the Baby Mine scene and the scene where Nani is singing to Lilo. Not Mufasa, not Bambi's mom, no one dies, but my heart always shatters.

Oh, I'd forgotten about that. Not going to say thanks for reminding me because, you know...sniffles...

Just wanted to say I love your Maggie and Hopey icon. Love that comic.

Thanks! Love and Rockets is my favorite American comic.

Ugh, god, being reminded of this is even worse after I just stumbled on some real-life stories about elephants in captivity who were deemed mad. At least Dumbo and his mom got a happy ending.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
...so, is Lilo and Stitch literally the only Disney Movie you've seen or...?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Out of how many Disney movies?

Maybe you're right, but as far as I can remember the 90's Disney were worse (Judge Claude Frollo...ugh). Disney really loved to push their borders back then.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh God

That movie was dark, man. A lot of the Disney movies were but that one was just...scary to me as a child (But I did still like it. More so now that I'm older though)

I always wonder how exactly the pitch session went for Hunchback of Notre Dame. "Okay, here's my idea for our next big tentpole movie...Hunchback of Notre Dame! For kids. Kids love Victor Hugo." I love that movie but...seriously, how did that ever happen?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd never read the book, but I saw a stage play of Hunchback shortly before the Disney version was announced and I thought "Wow. How is that going to work?"

I still haven't seen the Disney movie. Someday I should just to satisfy my mild curiosity.
