I hate auto-tune too. I know it has its use in small doses, but these days people are so auto-tuned they don't sound like people, they sound like computers.

Computers are really sexy, though.

They aren't people, they're pop stars.

I find this comment insulting as a Vocaloid fan.

this is EXACTLY me. There are so many songs I can't listen to because they're autotuned from here to hell. What happened to singers being people who can actually sing on key?

It frustrates me even more when they can sing on key and autotune for effect. Lady Gaga, looking at you.

I hate auto-tune too. I don't find it hard to find un-autotuned artists though. Maybe it's just the genres I like? I dunno.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-06 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
stop listening to only glee covers then, duh

Me too. I'd rather hear a raw, blemished voice than an auto-tuned to "perfection" voice. Auto-tuned hits the uncanny valley for my ears.

Auto-tune has its place when the artist is using it to artificially adjust their vocals for an intentional musical effect, but... I just don't get when it's used because the singer is always slightly off-key.

There are literally millions of aspiring musicians out there - why not just hire someone who can actually sing? It's what they did for decades.

One of my favourite rappers had some mainstream success with a couple of poppy, sung singles and now his latest album is loaded with autotuned vocals and dance beats. Sigh.

Lol, why is this a secret? Like, it's okay that you don't like autotune, but lots of other people hate it too.

As for music recs, there's plenty of great music out there, OP! Places like last.fm and even Youtube are great for finding music.

A few of my favourites are Simon & Garfunkel, Billy Joel, Nick Drake, Black (Colin Vearncombe), Eva Cassidy (who has not a hint of autotune and sings like an angel), and Fleet Foxes. Some more modern artists to listen to are Birdy, One Republic and Keane.

I usually listen to "indie" music like Tom Waits and Arcade Fire, but autotune used as an instrument can be amazing, for example, 808s & Heartbreak.

Joining the anti-autotune group. I don't care if an artist overuses it to patch up a weak voice, I just avoid them, but what pisses me off is when an artist who knows better and can do better uses it.

Looking at you, fun. That autotuning nearly ruined Some Nights for me.

Question from someoone with no ear for music: If it's not overdone, can you really, 100% indentify which sog has been autotuned and which hasn't? I mean, ideally you would just hear someone singing right...

Agreed. They used to make it a point to hide it or have it be less obvious but now...have you heard Britney Spears' recent songs? Ugh!

I must be one of the few people who can't even tell when they're using it. I honestly don't think I'd care either.

But if it's really everywhere then yeah, that kinda sucks for you OP. Have you tried getting live versions of songs?

(Now I'm wondering if anyone's ever autotuned a Vocaloid track. Hmmm.)

Man, that one song by Fun, Some Nights, I love it but I have to stop it at a certain point because of that awful autotune solo.

I try not to think about it if it's not obvious enough.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-07 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I looooove autotune. It makes the human voice SO much more interesting to listen to :)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-07 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
You're either only into top40 or you're really bad at finding new music -- I hate auto-tune as well but I have no problem whatsoever finding loads of new, amazing, non-autotuned music. It's EVERYWHERE with a bit of effort.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-07 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like autotune either but it's REALLY not hard to find music without it

(Anonymous) 2012-11-07 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I don't listen to much current music in general so I don't know how bad some of the examples you're thinking of are, but I don't normally mind voice modulation. Autotune being the lowest form of it, btw; Or do you lump anything that is not 100% pure human voice into "ugh autotune"? If so, as a Pogo fan I take umbridge with that.

[personal profile] barnabys_bane 2012-11-07 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, if a song is done is a studio setting nowadays, it's almost guaranteed to be autotuned to some extent (yeah, even your indie bands, guys). It's too prevalent in the industry and has been for a while now. I personally dislike the overtly autotuned sound, but it's too prevalent in the industry to simply die off because people dislike it. When image is as important as it is in the music industry, looks and stage presence account for a hell of a lot more than musical talent these days.

I work with audio mixing, and I can tell you that autotune (and software like it) is useful for cutting down how much time it can take to lay down vocals. It's not that the singers a off-pitch, precisely: even singers with great pitch can sometimes sing a note just a little bit flat or sharp. So when the take is otherwise great, it's sometimes useful to highlight the flaw and correct it, rather than re-do the whole thing.

But then, I only use it for single notes or small phrases -- not for the entire song.
