You're not obligated to contribute anything to fandom. You get into fandom because it's fun and makes you happy. If you start feeling like you need to contribute something to it, it's not going to make you happy. Just enjoy!

Have you engaged in discussions on comms, forums, etc? That counts as a contribution.

The sum total of my contributions to several of my main fandoms has been online discussion and panel participation at cons. The only other things I've ever done for any fandom is cosplay.

Why haven't you? Not inspired? Not talented? Not interested? Afraid of criticism? No time? Nowhere to post your work?

Anyway. Fandom's a two-part deal. Some people create, but other people have to be there to admire the work that those people put out. If your role works for you, rock it.

It's probably for the best.

*nod* Seconding Salika. Those who read/enjoy art and fic are also important. Obviously it can't work if no one's contributing, but it shouldn't be an expectation of every single person, either.

However, if you do want to write fic/draw art (not because you feel obligated to, just because you get plotbunnies or whatever) go for it!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Wellll...to be honest, fic and art done by 11 year-olds isn't great. In fact, it's usually shit. So it's no great loss to fandom.

It is kind of a loss to yourself, though. Participating, no matter how small, is worth it.

Though, perhaps, if you could wait until that magical 18th birthday before posting anything remotely pornographic, that would really be nice. For legal and squick reasons.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm 26, I've been into fandom (well, reading fanfic) since I was 13 or so. The most active I've ever been is posting anon on FS. I have no regrets.

I'm 21, been in fandom since I was 13, never written fic/produced art, and have zero regrets.

A lot of things count as contributions. If you've ever left some kind of feedback on a fanwork, shared a link with a friend, or added to a discussion (say, by submitting a secret?), those totally qualify.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Being a part of a fandom means you enjoy the canon/fanon/etc. It has nothing to do with contribution, that's optional.

Well, hey! You just contributed a fandom secret, right?

Seriously, I wouldn't worry so much. :) Discussion, comments, recommendations, etc.- they're all part of the essential fandom culture. If you want to make some fanfic or fanart or fanbaking or something, you totally should! But that's if you want to. There's nothing inexcusable about not doing it.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
All I've ever done is comment and cheer people on. For over a decade. I don't feel guilty, I'm not artistic in the least and couldn't write fic to save my soul.

if it weren't for people like you (and me), the writers and artists would have no one to show their work to...we contribute by encouragement :)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I think...you got a wrong message OP. I've been in fandom since I was 18 [24 now], and any fics I've written are F-locked, if not actually completely private. The only other 'contribution' I've made to fandom is private rps. You don't have to contribute anything to be a part of fandom. It just means you won't become a BNF - which is something that's not that great a thing to be anyways most of the time.

...So? No one is judging you for that.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's OK OP. Not everyone is a writer or an artist. There is a lot of really bad crap in fandom already so don't just do something to say you did something.
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-11-08 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I have been in fandom longer and have contributed nothing. I do not feel bad about this. In fact, I feel fantastic.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Not quite the OP's problem (I have contributed), but I do feel guilty. I'm pretty capable, and the stuff I put out is well received. But I feel like I should put out more since I have both ideas and skill. And every time someone wants more fic of my OTP, I feel guilty for not putting anything else out.

For all other fandoms, I can adopt everyone's above no obligation/discussion = contribution mindset. But for this one, I can't help but angst.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
If you've ever reviewed a fic or commented on others' art, you've contributed.

I'm sure you've noticed that there are people here in their 40s who have been in fandom in some way since the age you started. You're only just beginning. And I must nth that if you've ever read or looked at or commented on fic or art, you are contributing in a meaningful way.

I have been going to anime conventions for almost a decade, but last year for the first time I came as a workshop host. And it was great. I could have contributed in some way before that, sure, but the time was right last year. And it was amazing. You'll find something that you feel that way about, and it will be totally natural for you, so don't beat yourself up.

Y'know, sometimes I appreciate fans giving their opinions and insight about fandom as much as I appreciate art or fic. And even just seeing everyone else get excited and have fun is a big part of why I participate in fandom. So you may hvae done more than you think, and even if you didn't you're having fun which is also important. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 25, I've also been in fandom since I was 11, and and I haven't contributed anything since I was 14, and I have absolutely no guilt about it. I'm not creative, I'm just a consumer of the product

I've been in fandom for roughly a decade. I only started contributing maybe a year or so ago, including commenting on/reviewing things. It's fine to be a lurker if that's fulfilling to you in fandom. It's meant to be fun, so do what feels best to you.
