Common Fanfic Plots You Absolutely Cannot Stand

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
So, yesterday, in the "what are your kinks?" thread, someone said that they love fics where a character is treated like crap and shunned by his/her friends, and the friends eventually realize how wrong they were and are sorry, but the character blows them off and refuses to forgive them and makes different friends.

I, on the other hand, was reminded that I hate that stock fanfic plot with the fiery passion of a thousand exploding suns. Which got me thinking: what stock fic plots/cliches/tropes do you guys absolutely hate? Whether they're specific to a particular fandom or occur in many fandoms, what kind of stuff brings out the "ugh" in you?

Evil character's secretly a woobie that just needs the *right* kind of person and their love to magically overcome their every shortcoming.

I hate in Snape/Harry or Draco/Harry fics where Ron and/or Hermione go batshit insane (get violent, tell the entire school, the press, whatever) when they find out about that Harry is dating/friends with Snape or Draco. Maybe it's IC for Ron to be a bit of a jerk and for Hermione to be overly concerned, but I've seen it so many times that I'd like to see some different reactions.

I hate when the UST gets resolved too quickly and then everything is all sex and "I love you" for the best 15 chapters.

YES!

I love the UST so hard. That's always my favorite part, and once the happiness commences I quit caring. I actually have that issue with *writing* too. I'm writing a medium-sized fic right now and I finally resolved the UST and now I'm all meh about finishing it. LOL I will finish it, but I'm just not as invested any more.

Even commoon, stock fanfic plots can be good if the characters/dialogue/setup are well written. But there's nothing good about the overused, rarely changed "power of a thousand burning suns" degree of hate for something.

In other words, judge not, lest ye be judged, anon.

Re: Common Fanfic Plots You Absolutely Cannot Stand

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yes there is.

I'm not judging. I never said I judged people for liking it. I don't shit on other people for liking it either, but I personally? Hate it. Always have hated it. Always will hate it. And yes, with the power of a thousand burning suns.

Any sort of ridiculous cutesy transformation plot, the most common ones being "someone gets miscellaneous cat parts/is an animal now" and "x and y get de-aged to teenagers and fall in lurv." Also, I'm not a huge fan of stories that break the fourth wall and have "characters from z discover their fandom!" type stories. Just...why do you want that? :/

Re: Common Fanfic Plots You Absolutely Cannot Stand

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Break the fourth wall? Admittedly ymmv, but some fandoms do this ala canon which, for me, makes it an appropriate thing to add to ficcage.

Gintama plays parkour on the fourth wall.

-A male character that has stereotypically feminine or "uke" traits (caring, gentle, emotional, shorter and cute, etc) is raped so female readers can get off on it. (I love that sort of character type, so I run into this a loooot with my favorite characters. One in particular, ugh.)

-Character A, who is canonically involved with Character B, suddenly decides they're in love with Character C without proper build-up. Just...nope, that relationship means nothing, I want C now. It makes A look really fickle and unloyal IMO.

-This is sort of fandom-specific since I run into it a lot in one particular fandom, but I'd imagine it happens in other ones...Fakir in Princess Tutu is the dark, broody, serious type, but he's also portrayed as veeeeery awkward around other people and EXTREMELY shy around nudity. (There's a running gag throughout the show of him accidentally being around when the main character transforms from a duck into a girl--and she's always naked as a girl. At one point when he realizes she's transforming he runs about half a block away and hides behind a building until she gets dressed.)

For whatever reason the majority of smutty fanfic with him as a teenager has him written as being this super-confident, smouldering sex god in bed and it drives me nuts because it seems to clash a ton with how uncomfortable he is with nudity. I mean, if it was fanfic set when he's an adult, I don't have any problem with it, but I don't think there's any reason to have him be so perfect in bed as an awkward teenager.

(It makes slightly more sense when he's with Mytho, since he's around Mytho when he's nude a few times and he doesn't go running for the hills then, but it still seems odd for him to be all...competent and experienced, suddenly.)

Oh, and that reminds me, I also hate hate hate hate hate hate fanfic that has Fakir raping Mytho (related to my first complaint I guess). It makes ABSOLUTELY no sense for Fakir to rape him. Dubcon maybe since he starts out being emotionally manipulative and abusive toward Mytho, but a lot of the stuff I've read has Mytho blatantly saying "no" and Fakir ignoring it and oh man that bothers me.

Character A saves Character B from abusive Character C. It always seems to glorify ship A x B while leaving C as a cardboard throw-a-way.

Highschool AUs. All of them. Mainly because they're boring. If I wanted fiction about highschools, I'd put Nickelodeon or Disney on.

Human characters growing/getting wings. They're human, they don't get to have wings. Here's looking at you, SPN fandom.

All!Human AUs. My favourite characters tend to be non-human for some reason. Turning them human seems pointless, and takes away some of their character, IMO.

And a random pet peeve I have that is more about making a character OOC, is when authors make characters call another character something they've never called them in canon. Again using SPN, Sam is Sam, sometimes Sammy, but never Samuel.

AUs from speculative or historical where everyone is a normal person (so, earth-AUs for sci-fi works, modern-day-AUs for works set in the past, no-powers-AUs for superhero works, no-magic-AUs for fantasy works).

If the whole focus of the story is exploring 'OMG LOOK HOW DIFFERENT THEY ARE' they can be really good (like that awesome DS9 episode "Far Beyond the Stars"), but they usually aren't. They're usually just "yeah, picture these hot actors being these completely different characters with somewhat similar personalities to their canon characters being engaged in some boring rom-com plot."

I loathe that trope, too. I see it so much in Teen Wolf fandom, especially with Scott being a dick to poor baby Stiles, and I. just. can't.

ETA: Which doesn't mean I dislike Stiles, of course; he's one of my favorites. I just HATE this trope in any fandom I see it in, because it's thinly veiled character bashing of characters who don't kiss up to the authors' favorites 24/7.

I haaaate "if you hurt them I'll hurt you" tropes, and whenever jealousy is treated as romantic and proof of how much one character loves another.

Love triangles. The concept itself doesn't interest me, and on top of that, I have yet to see a well-written love triangle fanfic plot.

Relatedly, when they take characters who are canonically close friends and warp it into some kind of friendzone situation where one character only cares about the other one because he wants to get into her pants. (I say he and her because that's the way I always see it, though I'm sure it happens gender-reversed and in slash or femslash, too.)

I hate stories where Character A is sick/injured/acquires a disability/etc and the entire fic centers about Character B's feelings as he or she's taking care of them. It'd be fine if Character A gets their fair share of the perspective time, but when their issues only exist to further someone else's story, it makes me gag.

So, basicaly like 60-80% of the h/c I've ever tried to read.

-Any kind of "grown up" real world AU, generally. Coffee shop AUs, bakery AUs, carnival AUs, police AUs, etc. Because I've read at least 100 of the damn things in a dozen fandoms and nearly every time the author has gotten some major detail about the job / industry / whatever completely wrong. I can think of maybe half a dozen exceptions where I either didn't notice any errors, or they were so small I could forgive the lack of knowledge. On the other hand, I tend to enjoy well-written college and high school AUs. I think its a case of authors writing what they know (school) versus what they fantasize about ("cool" jobs).

-Anything where Character A is picked on, ignored, or otherwise slighted by the rest of the cast. Especially if their love interest doesn't notice the problem, or contributes to the problem.

-Ukefication of non-uke characters. I love my femmes and my queens and my twinks, and I'm personally about as effeminate as a man can get, but it really bothers me when a character (male or female) gets turned into a cringing flower constantly subject to assault and abuse, just so the big muscular tall strong brave stony-faced love interest can swoop in and save them

-Standard anti-heroes and villains being turned super grimdark and edgy. And related to that, sympathetic villains being made unsympathetic just to make them more scary. Loki doesn't need to be murdering kittens and bathing in the severed body parts of his enemies to be cool and menacing, guys, I promise. Dumbledore doesn't need to be a secret supervillain to serve as an effective antagonist for a story. Going over the top with the gore and rape and grimdark just makes a good villain LESS scary.

Whenever, in a gender-swap fic, the character who *wasn't* gender swapped thinks about how they 'love X, but they really really missed being with Y gender'.

Always just makes me feel really really bad for X.

One of my fandoms has a character who's forced into a leadership position without any experience or training, and very limited support. It's one of those 'goofy kid turns out to be the Chosen One who will save us all' plots, except that in canon the goofy kid is only as competent as he reasonably could be, and the fact that he's 'chosen' doesn't magically give him the skills to lead his people. He's a fascinating character- bitter, self-recriminating, angry, determined, brave, and complex in a way you hardly ever see in these plots. So it drives me up a tree when fanfic authors give him the magical insight everyone in-verse assumes he should have. It makes him so much flatter.

It also hugs me when people pair him with the major antagonist in a consensual relationship. I loves me some good enemy-fucking, don't get me wrong, but in canon the protagonist doesn't feel obsession or fascination or forbidden attraction to the bad guy, just weariness and scorn. Sometimes annoyance. It's not my idea of a sexy enemy time.

Oh, I thought of one more: romance fics where character X is ~the ONLY one who has ever cared about/understood/acted friendly towards/cracked through the facade of character Y~

Newsflash: turning a pairing from "two people who fall in love" to "two codependent wrecks who literally do not like, have never been liked by, and do not have a remotely satisfying personal relationship with anyone, ever", is not romantic. It's disturbing, depressing, ugly, and squicky.

So GTFO, Alfred-and-Lois-dismissing Batman/Superman shippers, five-bazillion-other-companions-minimizing Doctor/Rose and Doctor/Jack shippers, Scooby-bashing Buffy/Spike shippers, and super-woobifying Tony/Anyone shippers who ignore Rhodey's existence.

Shippy fic with veiled bashing of a rival ship. Emphasis on veiled.

If a fic portrays, say, Rose Tyler as an evil jealous psycho cheating rapist slut with bonus buckets of blatant classism poured all over the whole thing, and Martha as a heavenly nurturing Madonna whose ass the sun shines out of, I don't care at all. In fact, they can be tons of fun and sometimes even rather cathartic and endearing if done with the right amount of overwrought emotion and melodrama.

But fics that delicately, tastefully, passive-aggressively chip away at all Rose's worth as a human being and carefully undermine every little detail that gives her relationship with the Doctor meaning, so that she slowly becomes nonviable as a love interest while Martha quietly and ever-so-subtly lurks in the background waiting for the right moment to pounce and get her claws in the Doctor in the most delicate, tasteful manner possible? Those completely disgust me.

Plots that hinge on characters never actually talking to each other or making assumptions about each other (in spite of being good friends/in a relationship) or being extremely stupid.

Also, third parties meddling in another character's quarrels, particularly romantic quarrels, and most especially where the third party only knows one side of the situation and doesn't even bother to ask for the other.
