few doctors. there are plenty of stories of doctors REFUSING to listen to their own patients, and i am not talking just about people who are like 300 pounds. plus the idea that anyone can lose weight easily if they just try hard enough + keep it off is something that needs to die a swift death.

Oh my god yes this so much. It's actually almost impossible to lose more than 10-15 pounds and keep it off indefinitely, here's a Cracked article about it that links to a bunch of studies on the subject (http://www.cracked.com/quick-fixes/fat-officially-incurable-according-to-science/).

No, it really isn't (points to self, mother, several friends etc etc).

Part of the word indefinitely would mean that you have to wait until the person dies in order to claim they kept it off indefinitely.

If you actually lost that many people I'm terribly sorry, but since you included yourself on the list and you likely aren't a ghost I'm going to assume they didn't.

da, don't be a dick. It's obvious someone has lost weight and will keep it off for the rest of their lives if their daily routine--their new lifestyle--keeps the pounds at bay. It's people who exercise/diet to lose weight and then go straight back to their usual habits once they're done losing weight that will gain it all back.

I really wish DW had a like button.

and a +1 button.

seriously.

exercise and diet to lose weight isn't something you do until you're where you want to be and then fuck it and go back to the bad habits that put the weight on in the first place.

it's constant maintenance and adjusting to a new lifestyle of exercise and eating right.

which is why fad diets are so notoriously bad about keeping the weight off. there's no maintenance. just the weight loss/weight gain cycle.

which is dangerous as well.

That seems really strange to me.... I've seen TONS of cases on /r/loseit on reddit alone. People going from like 350 pounds to 170, and sticking at it for years. I know anecdotal evidence isn't reliable but that article just completely clashes with a significant amount of my friends and people I've seen online.

Cracked loves to cherry-pick sources. They're unreliable with anything beyond trivia.
