Re: CLAMP Thread, Part VII

Mokona also had a more important role in the manga due to the crossover with TRC. Since all of those crossovers were cut out for the anime, Mokona was left in as a cute mascot...in a series that didn't need a cute mascot.

The white Mokona (Soel) was a much better character than the black one (Larg) in the end, though -- I think Larg was ultimately reduced to arm decoration in the last chapters.

You need to find yourself a Lamont!

Is it? Why?

I thought the parallel was rather obvious. In both versions it's her feelings that both causes her problems and in the end solves them.

Though granted, in Sherlock there's a lot of additional story that also causes her problems. I liked that she was made a larger player, and that it was connected to the red thread of Moriarty running through the whole series, though. In the original she only says she was warned, but we never find out by whom. I liked that it was developed as a part of the major storyline this time.

And it's a very very good film, whereas QoS wasn't.

That seems to be the consensus! Glad to hear it in case I don't see QoS. I don't like to miss anything plot wise, but it sounds like that's not an issue.

Gillen's stated that the whole point of how he did the ending was so that kid Loki would be completely gone and never have a chance of coming back. He wanted to make it difficult to the point of impossible for any later writers to bring him back, because kid Loki is his baby and he doesn't want any other writers to write him.

Or something.

But, I mean, he's lied before and also said some weird confusing things on his formspring about the age of Loki in Young Avengers, so I don't know, either he's lying in his whole "why I did it" post for why he ended his run of Journey Into Mystery the way he did, and kid Loki's still in there somewhere or something, or he lied in that formspring answer about Loki's age in Young Avengers and the other thing's he's said regarding Loki in Young Avengers are just indicative of him not realizing how creepy he's just made the whole situation.

That's my real worry, that it's going to be a creepfest without the author realizing that it's a creepfest. Because it seems he thinks this is a good segue into a real redemption story for old Loki but... it's got some very online-predator-y vibes, soooo.

WATANUKI couldn't stand him by the end of XXXholic and apparently he's still showing up in stuff.

Okay. A lot of people use those things to say "OMG, BBC!Irene is so smart!" when, again, those things didn't really require that much intelligence.

I'm sorry but I'm the Cheetos to your cast iron omelet pan. I'm the Electrolux Vacuum Cleaner to your Central Kentucky Vacation. I'm the cube root of -82 to your six and a half inches. No wonder neither of us can understand this relationship.

Yeah it was one of those moments that just set off all the Hell No! alarms in my head.
I'm assuming it wasn't meant to be as creepy as it seemed but still ugh!

Although having literally just finished watching Dr. No for the first time in a decade, I'd forgotten just how bad the early Bonds were with general creepiness and misogyny.

My nails! I love nail polish, and even without it my nails are really nice, so they make my hands pretty.

(Now, if only I could like that much any other part of my body...)

Yeah, kid Loki has been wiped completely out of existence.

The fact that an almost six foot tall, extremely athletic 23 year old man was verbally assaulting a teenaged girl using what is, in Korean, incredibly inappropriate language makes it a gendered attack, to my eyes. By using that language he was denying her personhood - in Korean you basically only curse in conversation with your very closest friends or with people you consider to be non-people, completely without dignity.

When he's referring to "people like you" he's not referring to "stalkers" as a category, he's referring to saesang fans, who are understood to always already by teenaged girls. There are other people who have the same behavior patterns, but as a category they're always imagined to be sad girls with no life outside of Their Band.

There isn't really any way that there could be an equivalent incident involving a female idol, because none of the female idols are physically imposing enough for the complete and (to me) abhorrent imbalance of power to be maintained.

Yes, it's a famous person freaking out at a stalker. But it's also an adult man beating up and verbally assaulting a teenaged girl who was so disturbed that she walked closer to him so that he could continue hitting her when he told her to. I just. There's no universe where that is not fucked up.

And hardly anyone knows that because there aren't enough cousins in the US who are eager to go and marry each other (even if any want to, most of them don't want to brave the social stigma). States haven't bothered to get rid of the laws that allow it because they've faded into irrelevance.

Actually, Granada's version is lovely, so if you can get a hold of it, it might make you feel less depressed. (-:

I really don't thing BBCSherlock's Irene was canon at all. Recall how, in the story, Irene outwits Holmes and runs off to America (or wherever) with her true love. However, in BBC, Irene falls in love with Sherlock (????) and loses to him and in the end she begs for mercy and needs him to come save her. Funny how a story written over a hundred years ago has a stronger female character than a TV show written today.

I saw it in Manchester. When the guy started caressing Bond there was a a definite (overall female sounding) 'ooh' when Bond said it wouldn't be his first time there was a (overall male sounding) laugh.

Don't know what it means, but I got more of a surprised vibe at an unexpected scene than a homophobic one.

Daniel Craig said in an interview that he thinks Bond should seduce a man and show that as a sex scene. He believes Bond would stop at nothing to get what he wanted, and that would include sleeping with men.

Yeah... that's my question too. If they did, that less about them fetishishing a profession and more them being a creepy jerk.

AYRT

I think everyone has a right to their opinion - but I also think if you're discussing a touchy topic then you should really, really be careful with how you phrase what you say. After the time she did that [or...the only time I was present for, anyways] her best friend and I did talk a little about it [we were the two who had attempted it] and well...Pretty much agreed that she didn't really get what she was talking about.

I can just see Bond's inner monologue. "You know, the last time someone tied me to a chair, he stripped me naked and tortured me by hitting me in the balls, but no, do continue with your hand on my knee, that's so much more terrifying."

In other topics: what, just because people have now accepted that Craig makes an awesome Bond, you feel like you can dial down the naked fanservice? Now, when he's tied to the chair, he's fully dressed? Not even an unbuttoned shirt? Screenwriters, I am disappoint.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
There's probably a translation problem here- "saesang fan" as a designation means teenaged girls. "you guys" is specifically referring to a group of teenaged girls who for all sorts of incredibly fucked up reasons devote all of their time and energy into stalking famous dudes.

The fact that she was a saesang is the only reason that an adult man physically assaulting a teenaged girl for an extended period of time in a public place wasn't a Huge Fucking Deal. The fact that he's the kind of tall, muscular, banks-on-his-bad-boy-appeal adult man who thinks it's okay to assault a teenaged girl and brag about how she won't be able to go home because her face is swollen doesn't seem to bug people.

I just. I don't get it. Like I said in the secret, "that slut deserved it".

It's funny, because I've been reading a wank in a completely different fandom today, and thinking "yeah, I agree that X was a stupid thing to do (by the writers of the canon), but you're using all the wrong arguments".
