Bad fic has its own kind of addictive pull.

It's entertainment and as long as you enjoy reading bad fanfics why should it be a bad thing?

I personally love bad movies, because they are entertaining and sometimes I just want to be entertained without getting obsessed or think about it later.

Well so long as you're having fun and not hurting anyone...?

LOL. At least someone is enjoying it?

Also, might I recommend 50 Shades of Grey. You'd love it, I'm struggling my way through and it's so godawful.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-11 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
OP - Oh god. I read 50 Shades of Grey and it was more just plain bad and frustrating than hilariously bad for me, so I didn't enjoy it at all and ended up skimming the last 100 pages or so. Plus the sex scenes were really boring. Not the right brand of badness, lol.

Hahaaa! I am having the exact same experience. Besides a few howlers like "What was that stupid fool thinking?" (I seriously can't get enough of that line, it's amazing) it's just terribad. The sex isn't very scintillating either. The internet has made me a porn connoisseur, I'm like "What, no breathplay? No medical kink? You amateur." XD

(Anonymous) 2012-11-12 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Lmao, right? Some of the lines are truly amazing - I still like to yell "MY MOTHER WAS A CRACK WHORE!" at my friends - but the book over all was not nearly bad enough to be enjoyable. No puppy play, either! Honestly, the sex all reads like someone read some bad BDSM erotica and fanfic and read the wiki article and based all their knowledge on that. Which is probably not too far off, come to think of it.

Ohhh I love badfic. Especially bad porn.

I will never not laugh when an author describes someone's cock as "turgid" or their asshole as "fluttering."

I've also seen assholes described as "quivering", usually in anticipation. I just... no, guys. Even if it is hilarious, no.

OK, turgid may be an inappropriately purple word, but at least it actually, you know, applies.

I...don't think I want to see an anus flutter...

Does badfic have the same sort of appeal as watching terrible reality TV shows? You know it's a trainwreck, but utterly fascinating.
elephantinegrace: (Default)

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2012-11-12 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I hope so. I'm pretty sure no one's reading "My Immortal" or watching "Glee" for the excellent plot and in-depth characterization.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-12 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
What I don't get are the people who watch Glee and still act all pissed off when it's terrible or characters do and say terrible things. Shouldn't you be expecting that by now...?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-12 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
You know what, dude? If that's what's up, then FUCK YEAH to you. We all have guilty pleasures. We all have things that we believe we "shouldn't" like but that nonetheless hits our buttons. That's what this is for you. And you should fucking own it.

There's value in digging something just for the pleasure it gives you, whether that pleasure is on an intellectual level or not. We're only here for a short time, aren't we? Might as well do what makes us happy when given the opportunity.

Because passion, dude. All those "well written" fics were written, at least partially, with an eye to peer pressure and what's acceptable by the fandom. What's "good". What is normal. What did my English teacher tell me about symbolism. All the tropes are nice and safe and common and popular. And boring.

You go out into the wilds of the kinkmeme and you'll find people saying "WTF. This is totally ridiculous, scandalous, and spits in the eye of decency and good taste. I'm totally going to hell for even thinking this. Let's write puppy!"

And it's fun. It's different. Okay, a lot of it is nigh unreadable, but the stuff that is readable is the pure distilled essence of uninhibited imagination. And that's totally refreshing.
