He makes mistakes (like everyone) and can be a total douche-nozzle, but I do overall like and sympathize with Arthur! (I think I'm somewhat behind on the show, though? Not sure, but I don't remember the part about his father. :/ Which is terribly sad, gah. WHY CAN'T YOU BE NICE TO YOUR SON EVEN AFTER DYING?!)

People who watch it in the US on SyFy probably didn't know that Uther fact, OP!

Anyway, I sympathize with Arthur too. For some reason he's my favorite character. I completely agree with this secret. He can be a complete dollophead but I feel for him because I have that same problem. Where I go back and forth between being open to people who care about me and being aloof or just plain asshole-ish.

I believe SyFy doesn't air the current series until 2013, that's all.

i had no idea people complained about Arthur...i totally agree with you and considering the lore am really worried about how closely the show will stick to it

Of course there are people who complain about Arthur. Every character has detractors and defenders. If you hang out in certain places, it can give you the impression that Arthur is a terrible human being, or that he isn't the favorite or second favorite character of the vast majority of fans (which he definitely is.) My flist has always been overwhelmingly Arthur stans, and with some of them, if they see two pieces of criticism on their flist or dash or wherever in rapid enough succession, they flip right out and decide NOBODY ELSE LOVES ARTHUR POOR BABY.

So I'm guessing OP is either one of the POOR BABY fans or just unlucky in their choice of Merlin-related hangouts. Or both. There's plenty of sympathy for and appreciation of Arthur out there, I assure you.

I am hoping that Uthur being a total asshat to Arthur on his return from the dead will have greater implications ie. maybe now Arthur questions his idol worship of his father, eventually he'll come around to reassessing his attitude towards magic. That's where I HOPE the show will go, whether or not it does...

So yeah, get what you're saying and of course Arthur has every right to be suspicious of everything, not just magic. But hopefully there's stuff there for the writers to work with. I do hope he doesn't get too hurt by what Morgana has just done to Gwen. Poor dude can't catch a break!

I liked him well enough in series 1-3, but after the whole Lancelot/Guinevere debacle and ten years worth of Daddy Issues, I sort of lost interest. (I mean really, he's pushing thirty and he STILL wants validation from a genocidal tyrant that everybody else hated?)

well one of arthur's biggest faults is that he doesn't see what he doesn't want to see most of the time. i do wish they'd done away with that a bit, he's so ignorant about some things it's frustrating to watch.
