All fanfiction is AU.

Did I just blow your mind.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-11 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes it is, but at some point it deviates so far from the original concept that the AU has absolutely nothing to do with it. I mean, you could take one of those coffee shop universes and publish the same story in every single fandom known to man, after switching the names to the main OTP of the fandom, of course. And you'd probably get the same gushing in all of them with the price of one.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-11 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not understand the coffeeshop AU at all.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-11 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I have seen coffee shop AUs with decent characterization and nods to canon, but... yeah. They're generally just fluff. Nothing wrong with people enjoying it, but it does get a bit tiresome when you see essentially the same story at least once in every fandom you encounter.

I mean we're arguing about what is essentially a matter of opinion, so it's not like I think I'm "right" and you're "wrong", but I do think there's a special joy in both constructing and reading an AU that takes familiar characters and puts them in an entirely different setting. I love seeing how an author has chosen to rework a character or plot element that works in the new setting but echoes elements of the original text. I think it's a fascinating form of textual commentary and the freedom the concept of the AU affords writers has resulted in some of the best, most thoughtful fanfiction that exists.

You don't, and that's fine too, although I do think you're missing out.

If you're just arguing that Sturgeon's Law holds true for AU fanfiction, I guess my reply to that is: of course it does. 90% of everything is crap.

AYRT. I agree that AUs have their good sides, since they allow the author to take a more flexible look at the material. I just personally don't like those AUs where the author changes everything: the setting, characters personalities, their histories, rewrites the existing relationships, etc. Those fics seem more like original fiction where the authors decided to use fandom characters in order to increase their views.

Given that I think the magic of a good AU has to do with its hidden similarities to the canon it's based on, I agree that past a certain point, if you've changed the setting, the relationships, and the character personalities, you're writing an original story, and you should probably cop to that.

I'm a huge fan of AUs, but I have to agree that there's a certain point where it stops feeling like an AU and starts feeling like original fiction. For me, personally, characterization is always a bit of a sticking point. If something is wildly out of character for the way that character would react in that type of setting or situation, it doesn't feel like that character anymore.

It sounds like you are complaining about bad AUs, my friend, not just AUs. In which case I have to say: duh.

I agree. It's the same as a writer taking their own characters and placing them in a different setting - an interesting, fun, and potentially very useful exercise. And as any writing, potentially awful.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-11 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree about AUs. My favorites are always the one that the author works in those nods to canon. I love seeing the ways that people can manage to stay true to the source text, even while wildly changing elements of it, like the events or setting.

High five for quoting Sturgeon's Law, btw. It remains true. So, so true.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-12 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
actually no one gives a shit that you want to split hairs over a secret.

you like AUs

big. fucking. deal.

You don't, and that's fine too, although I do think you're missing out.

that is such a lame fucking thing to say because no, no they're not. there is PLENTY of fanfiction out there to read that doesn't involve crappy AUs. I can tell you right now my entire fucking reading experiences hasn't suffered one goddamned whit because I don't read AUs.

I really wonder if people who say that shit really understand how IDIOTIC and DEFENSIVE it sounds.

you don't like that we don't like what you like?

TOUGH SHIT FUCKHEAD.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-11-12 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... pts isn't the one who sounds idiotic and defensive here.

Look at your comment. Now look at OP's secret. Now look back at your comment. Sadly, your comment isn't classy like the OP's secret.

Your comment is now anything else.

Holy shit, calm the fuck down.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-12 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Even fanfic that hews as closely to canon as possible is AU. That is the point that the OP was trying to make. You missed it, on purpose. Good for you.

Keep writing your AUs and pretending that they're not.
