Because petitions on the internet always work.

[personal profile] tasogare_n_hime 2012-11-14 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
So, people want to Secede from the union, and several have made petitions about it, because starting over from scratch is easier than dealing with Obama for four more years, or something.

The one getting the most attention is Texas. http://www.loweringthebar.net/2012/11/texas-votes-to-secede.html

Now there are more petitions! http://www.loweringthebar.net/2012/11/counter-petition-asks-to-deport-people-who-signed-other-petitions.html

This is the best thing ever after what has been a shitty day... I wonder if any of this will end up on the Daily Show, or Colbert Report.

Although I know very well it wont happen, I'm still laughing at this. I'd gladly tell some of those states goodbye.

I'm waiting for someone to start a petition to stop people from making more petitions. This is something I need to happen, but doing it myself would be cheating.

50/50 chance I worded this right

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-11-14 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm starting a petition to punish people who start petitions to infringe on people's first amendment right to starting petitions by starting petitions to ban petitions.

Psh, northern Maine has been trying to either secede, become their own state, or join Canada for years. People be crazy.

Look, we (well, OK, the British, since we didn't exist in any real sense, yet) gave it back after the War of 1812, so you've got to keep it.

(How else will you keep pretending that you won the war?)

Loweringthebar.net? Someone call James Cameron, we need him to raise it again.

Hey, if Texas leaves and Puerto Rico joins, we won't have to change the flag at all!

The counter-petition is hilarious. I wonder if there'll be a counter-counter petition. "Everyone who signed the 'Deport Everyone [Who] Signed a Petition to Withdraw Their State from the United States of America' petition doesn't get to eat any Texan food for the rest of their lives."

Hooray!

That's my main concern with admitting new states. I'd be glad to have Puerto Rico, but... BUT THE STARS ON THE FLAG, IT'S GOING TO BE SO SLOPPY WITH 51 NOW, OMG WHAT ARE WE--oh, there goes Texas, it's gonna be okay, all good and symmetrical again.

The constitution does allow states to merge or split into new states.

Does anyone who does't live there really know that West Virginia is its own state? Or we could smush the Dakotas or Carolinas together.

That was my first thought when I heard about the secession petition. >_> (Well, 'you', not 'we', since I'm not American, but you know what I mean.)

sign my petition to agree to ignore internet petitions

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-11-14 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Best part is a lot of signatures on the Texas petition are from out of state.

Even as a Texan I'd like to see it happen, once everyone sane got out, just for the lulz and the fact they would shut the fuck up about it once they came limping back.

If you live in Austin or can move there, you should be ok, because they want to secede from Texas.

Re: sign my petition to agree to ignore internet petitions

[personal profile] tasogare_n_hime 2012-11-14 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
People have really over-reacted to the election and started a stupid petition. Other people have really over-reacted to that petition, and started equally stupid petitions of their own. Anyone with any sense knows nothing is going to come of it, except maybe the the White House petition site will go down if the petitions get too out of hand. As you said it's stupid people doing stupid things, I find it funny, and I'm not sorry about that.

Actually, thinking about it more, most of them probably aren't stupid people. I imagine some of them are. A lot of them however are probably reasonably intelligent people who feel so strongly about how things have gone at the moment that they have just over-reacted. A good number are probably just trolls, or people who realize the whole thing is pointless and just want to have fun with it. It doesn't matter to me. I'm not signing anything, I'm just going to enjoy the show.

Honestly, I'm offended by both the people who signed this ludicrous petition and the people that keep trotting out this bullshit story as the punch line to some stupid joke. It's an excuse to be able to paint Americans and those from conservative-leaning states with a derp paintbrush. There are a lot if stupid people with access to the Internet. Some of those people know how to type their names. It doesn't mean anything except what I just said: stupid people do stupid things.

This. And they're not even anywhere approaching the majority. Plus random extremists threatening secession when crap doesn't go their way isn't exactly new, and it isn't limited just to the more traditionally "red" states (see: California, Oregon, Maine). The only thing novel about this is that there are so many petitions at once, but that's probably at least partially because of how easy it is for people to type up a petition and post it on the Internet.

I'm always ashamed of being from Texas when I see this kind of shit. It's not like Texans don't already have a bad rep, what we need is more people screaming to secede from the union. Arg.

Though I know nothing will come of it, those people are idiots, and not all the signatures are even from Texas. Still.
