non-religious charities

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
i know this is a weird place to ask. but ive been donating money to charities for months only to realize that all my money is not in fact going to help feed the poor or help the needy and part of it is being spent on buying bibles and missionaries which is not what i intended my money to do. idc if other people want to spread their religion, but i don't want a part of it and was horrified when i realised "help the hungry" meant with bibles b/c they don't present themselves as a religious organization at all.

what are some good secular charities i could switch to, fs? help me out

Where are you for a start, and what particular charities are you interested in?

(aid for the most deprived countries I take it?)

USA. anything that helps people that need it preferrably as directly as possible

I'd recommend donating to your local food bank, since they're almost always in need of help. Do some research beforehand, of course, but as a rule, local food banks are usually a good way to go.

Other than that, you can check out Charity Navigator. They rank charities and provide info on how much they spend on helping others as opposed to administration costs, etc. I use it to check up on charities before I decide to give to them: http://www.charitynavigator.org/

Seconding this. The bonus to that is, if you're really worried about where money ends up going, you can take the money you would donate and use it to buy food to give the food bank. And it's a really good idea in general, because with the economy the way it is, a lot of places have been reporting a greater demand at food banks from people who had never been to one before now having to use them to make ends meet.

what charities are the ones you mentioned that only provide bibles?
i'd like to know so i can knock them off my list - i'm a Christian, and i'd rather see my money go to saving lives and helping build communities. bibles aren't going to solve poverty.

I suggest research. There are some handy sites out there that will do the background check for you, and then you can always contact the charity and do your own background check before donating.

Some helpful sites:
http://www.charitynavigator.org/
http://www.bbb.org/us/charity/
http://www.charitychoices.com/howtouse.asp

Sorry I don't have any specific charities to send you to, but hopefully these help?

If you can't find any good secular charities, rest assured that most good religious charities don't do bullshit like hide their affiliation and pretend to feed the hungry while just giving them bibles instead, and tend to be more accepted and effective (mainly because of tradition).

Yeah, I don't shop at their thrift store anymore since I heard about that. Which is too bad because it's a good place to get cheap clothes, but I'll just have to find somewhere else. (Goodwill around here has prices that are way too high.)

You should try looking around online to see if there are any locally-owned thrift stores in your area. I always go to an Arc thrift store (Colorado chain) if I need to get something secondhand because they're non-religious (as far as I can tell) and their parent organization is dedicated to helping people with developmental disabilities find work, decent living arrangements and other assistance if they need it. Their prices are also hella better than Goodwill.

I didn't have to do much digging around to find them (I live near one of their larger locations), but I've looked into a few other places near where I work, and a few of them have non-religious agendas and decent prices for the goods they offer. It takes a bit of time, but it's worth it.

Do you have a ReStore? Those benefits Habitat for Humanity.

I'll donate clothes and the like to them, but not cash and I won't shop there. JFC why can't you just help people instead of using their desperation as another way to hammer in preaching

My personal favourite is Medecins Sans Frontiers - MSF, or Doctors Without Borders. They go to warzones and areas undergoing strife and provide health care and medical training.

meetup has some nonbelief charities. I'm also fond of the disaster ones (not because disasters are happening, but because they're actually helping instead of giving them dead tress and ink
