Just because something is popular, that doesn't EXACTLY mean it's good. It doesn't exactly mean it's BAD either... things become popular for a variety of different reasons and that's why no one will ever win a: "Well Naruto is a great show because so many people love it!" or "Well Naruto is a horrible show because so many people love it!" debate. Popularity is rarely linked to the quality of a show, directly.

In short: Not all that is popular is good, and not all that is unpopular is bad. D:

That's exactly what I'm saying, but it seems like people see popularity as a badge of stupidity while unpopularity is a sign of something being obscure and thus cool, and therefore people who like popular series get snubbed and... eh, I'm braindead at the moment, but yeah, I agree with you, and what pisses me off are the elitists over non-popular stuff, I guess.

And like I said in the above comment, my favorite manga is obscure as all hell, so don't get me wrong--I don't think anything obscure sucks. It's the elitism over it that bugs me, and though it's an unpopular opinion, some series get more popular because, for whatever reason, they appeal to a wider audience than other, less popular series.

...That and they probably get good marketing. Bottom line: Don't tell people not to watch popular stuff, because generally, it's popular for a reason.

For the most part I agree. I don't look down on people just because they like a popular show. But you have to understand the 'elitists' too.

A lot of popular anime have generated vast amounts of idiotic fangirls who adore the shows for all the wrong reasons- and the most prominent of these are shows like Naruto and Fullmetal Alchemist.

I don't think there's anything wrong with watching popular anime, but when that's ALL you watch and you start acting like you know everything there is to know about anime, etc... that's when you start annoying people. And that's why there are elitists who tell the single-minded Narutards to branch out.

Also, again I have to say that popularity doesn't always reflect worth. In my opinion it rarely does.

I'm kind of out of it too so this might have been confusing. Sorry. D: Basically: I agree that the nazi-elitism is a little overboard... but I also don't think they're always entirely wrong. I'm always happier to meet someone who likes SGT FROG than I am to meet someone who just watches Adult Swim for their anime fix.
