I've done NaNo twice and I still can't like it. My first was an original work and I didn't meet the deadline because I cared about what happened to my story and NaNo is all about word count and crack and being stupid. The next year I did a fanfic and I was at least able to finish because I wasn't as invested in what happened, but mostly because I went into it with the mindset that I was specifically supposed to be writing complete shit. I came up with some ideas that were really good and I knew that I'd be upset with how they turned out if I used them, so I saved them for other works (fanfic and original) that I actually cared about.

tl;dr - NaNo sucks and writing crack fanfic is the best way for anyone with a sense of self worth to go if they participate.

And what of the people who have published bestsellers that either originally began with or were finished during NaNo? Do they have no self-worth?

I'm willing to bet that you haven't actually published anything. And yet, a lot of published authors do NaNo. Who's doing it wrong? Who's being "stupid" and writing "crack" and "shit?" It's you. NaNo sucks for you because you suck. You are a bad writer, and NaNo makes that grossly apparent. That's why you don't like it.
