I ended up writing a 2000 word fic for nano last year and gave up.
This year I'm at 20k and can't go further on an original story. It sucks, it just sucks so I feel for you anon.
Back to the drawing board. I was hoping to accomplish at least one thing this year though.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-17 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
But that's 20K more than you would've had otherwise, right? I mean, even if you "fail NaNo," you've still got all those words and the start of something. All you have to do is figure out what's not working and fix it.

As someone who's lucky to bang out 500 words in a whole day, I'm envious.

20k is the dreaded sagging middle. when you hit it, you have to just plow right through.

almost all writers go through the sagging middle bit.

So write some shit. It'll still make you better.

exactly

If you create anything, you aren't uncreative.

It's pretty simple.

[personal profile] queen_saru 2012-11-17 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. One isn't ~less creative~ for writing fan fiction over original fiction, in my opinion.

However, I do have to say that I do NOT like the trend of "I wrote a fic for X fandom and changed the names so now it's original fiction~". If all you need to do is interchange names, then to be honest, your characterization must be shitty, because the odds of two different people reacting the same to situations is highly unlikely. :|

That said, I'm at 15k and very behind in NaNo, because I am leading up to a super sad part and I know it's going to kill me to write. XD And I hate writing 'out of order', so I can't just skip past it and come back.

It's NaNo. Don't let first-draft-itis put you in a tailspin. Shit can be edited so it's not shit anymore. You can't edit a blank page.

Also, so what if you're "just" writing fanfic? At least you're writing. Maybe you're just not ready to dip your toe into original fiction yet. There's nothing wrong with that.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-17 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I dislike Nano because the people running it make it all about the words rather than actually thinking a novel through. It's why I quit it--everything I ever wrote during it was trash, and I never wrote fanfiction for it ever. I write better and more coherently if I'm not trying to write 2K a day for a deadline that doesn't matter in the long run.

Don't let Nano get to you, nonnie. Whenever you're ready to write that original story, write it. You don't have to wait for the Nano spectacle to pass through November to start.

The whole point of Nano, to me, is to loosen up, make a big pile of new words, and have fun doing it.

It's a laxative for creative constipation. The product isn't likely to be shining golden nuggests of perfect words ... BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT. The point is to get things moving.

Yeah, I got to like 2k on my NaNoWriMo and stalled out. I was going to try and write a 50k fanfic so I could at least say I wrote a 50,000 word story this month, but that idea so far has been flopping, too. :(

Fanfic has its own challenges even if it's hard to see if they are equal to that of writing an original work, but even original stuff has derivative inspirations, etc. I think the reason people have such a hard time crossing over to original fic is because they just get very out of practice with it; there are plenty of people who have written original stories for a long time and feel they can't write fanfic worth shit.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-17 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I've done NaNo twice and I still can't like it. My first was an original work and I didn't meet the deadline because I cared about what happened to my story and NaNo is all about word count and crack and being stupid. The next year I did a fanfic and I was at least able to finish because I wasn't as invested in what happened, but mostly because I went into it with the mindset that I was specifically supposed to be writing complete shit. I came up with some ideas that were really good and I knew that I'd be upset with how they turned out if I used them, so I saved them for other works (fanfic and original) that I actually cared about.

tl;dr - NaNo sucks and writing crack fanfic is the best way for anyone with a sense of self worth to go if they participate.

Anybody who says you have to write original fiction for NaNoWriMo is an elitist turd.

I'm writing Pokemon tentacle hentai porn-with-plot fanfiction for mine-- I got blocked for a while but my wordcount is going up like a house on fire today and I think I can catch my (reduced) goal by Thanksgiving.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Some people are great at word-building and lousy at telling a story, other people are just the opposite. It's a rare writer who does both equally well. There's nothing wrong with taking other peoples' characters and settings and telling fantastic new stories with them if that's what you're good at.

Ugh NaNo.

I wouldn't buy into the hype too much, OP. Too much faith in a totally ridiculous and arbitrary word count spewing machine month is pointless.

So, you're not meant to be a writer of fiction.

Maybe you could write non-fiction pieces. Maybe you could be commissioned to write official books for an existent series. But you can never, ever write original fiction.

That sucks, if you thought you would be able to. At the same time, it is what it is. Not everyone is meant to do every thing. Your strengths and talents lie elsewhere. If you haven't discovered them yet, then you will eventually, and your joy at doing so will more than compensate for the disappointment you are currently feeling.

Don't force yourself. Face reality. Embrace who you are.

then search and replace, add in original names, scrub fandom source references, edit that sucker till it shines and submit.

Write fanfic, ignore the elitist snobs, and post your fic in fanfic communities where people will love you for it.

I would rather a pile of fanfics coming out of NANO, than a pile of original fics I won't ever read simply because they're original.

(I hate NANO because so many people drop out of reguular posting for the month while working on their NANO fics.)

So I'm gonna be the one to say it, huh? That the people who are all bitching about NaNo being crap and boo hoo words are... people who can't do it.

I'm currently at almost 75K, and you know what? I know a lot of it is crap. It's SUPPOSED to be crap! It's not about spitting out a perfect first draft. No one spits out a perfect first draft. It's about getting all you people who say you want to be writers off your butts and practicing the art of writing, because we all know November is the only month you'll ever write, and you won't even bother editing in December.

And for those of us who say "I am a writer," it's a way to help us focus on the the draft, reminding us that it's not going to be perfect the first time around, but if you can get the words, you can deal with making it make sense later.

You don't like it? Fine. You completely and utterly fail at NaNo? Fine. But don't give those of us who a) love and b) actually can meet and exceed the goal shit because you can't do it.

You just can't do it. Go fail in your own corner and leave us alone.

I think that's totally okay. Just work on fanfiction then. Come up with a plan for NaNo next year.
citrinesunset: (Default)

[personal profile] citrinesunset 2012-11-18 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
NaNo isn't for everyone. I tried it for years before I realized that I just didn't enjoy it and it wasn't helpful for me. Maybe I'll try it again someday, maybe not. But it's not the end of the world either way.

But I also realized that I'm not that into trying to write novels at this time. I've completed a couple drafts, but they stressed me out a lot and I realized I wanted to step back from that for a while. I love writing short stories, though.

Maybe you prefer writing fanfic. There's nothing wrong with that. But if you want to write original fiction, I wouldn't write it off too quickly. Like I said, NaNo might not have been a good fit for you. You might be judging your ideas too harshly, or you might just need to develop them more (I tend to believe that there aren't many bad ideas--it's just how they're developed and executed). You could also give short stories a try and see how that goes.

For ideas, maybe think about what you enjoy about fanfic. There are ways to take inspiration from fandom that are a lot more original than writing fic and changing the names. For example, say you're a Supernatural fan and your favorite character is Castiel. You might write a fic about him struggling to reconcile with his desire for free will. But free will vs. obedience to authority is a very broad theme that would lend itself well to any number of original characters and plots. So the challenge becomes thinking of ways to tell your own, original stories about that theme.

I wouldn't give up just yet. But if you give it a try and realize that you're just happier writing fanfic, that's okay.

For a while, I thought NaNo was ABOUT fanfiction, because so many of my fandom friends would post saying "sorry guys, I won't be very active in this community for a month, I'm doing NaNo!" and then they'd post a ginormous epic fanfic in December.
I didn't realize that most people write original novels for it.

Write what you want, anon.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I came here as an excuse not to write my NaNo novel. Now I feel guilty. What is up with all this butthurt over a silly writing challenge some people do? I don't get it.

Well, back to writing.
